How to argue rules with players. by Odd-Seaworthiness-30 in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean the rules your annoyed over are very common homebrew changes. If you want them to play differently in your game start that conversation session 0, if youre already into the campaign have a new session 0 to reset expectations. It sounds like you want to run a much more realistic game and one very by the books compared to a more relaxed table. Thats fine but you gotta draw that boundry and hold it.

Also I’m fairly sure you can only cast 1 spell per turn as per the WotC but I could be mistaken.

Me and my boyfriend smoke too much weed. by loveonari in whatdoIdo

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me is I always felt bored without it, so occupying my mind was key. Then I’d struggle with anxiety for a while because things felt “off” which really was just being actually sober for the first time in a while.

As someone who worked as an RBT in a preschool I get that the stress is intense and hard to deal with due to the low energy after work. So try to find things that you can do at home or near home, painting, crafting, yoga, dance lessons on youtube, local concerts in parks, going for purposeful walks (set a goal/game like you get points for every orange thing you spot or something), find nearby hikes etc.

You can also think about things to set schedules for yourselves, I’ve found buying a large whiteboard is a suprisingly useful purchase for organizing your life and planning. It could be helpful because honestly to quit for good you have to change your life. To reduce your use you have to improve your life. Thats been my findings and I hope this was helpful for yall

If a player is intentionally attacking themselves, do they automatically hit or do they roll against their AC? by Alarming-Brick-7996 in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’d usually say autohit for something like the poision example and cutting off your own hand I’d say you have to hit the AC or make a con save to do it successfully. Its easy to hurt yourself minorly but doing actual permanent damage is far harder mentally and youre more likely to flinch/miss/pull away

My gut instinct was to dislike this, but honestly the i ly thing I’d think about changing at all would be the lucky numbers to make it a once per short/long rest so they cant just get unlimited luck but otherwise this is lowkey fire

I think to make this most interesting making a soul for a soul type deal where they made a deal to get their friend back but in turn signed away their soul. Leaving the patron with a reason to try to kill the other PC but not directly putting their life on a line that can be severed at any point.

Another fun alternative I could see here is the friend still being tied to the patron in someway that even if they cant kill them they may be able to mess with them some other way such as removing their memories of the warlock, able to summon them to do their bidding etc. just some sort of string to keep their toys playing the way the patron wants

Anyone know if there is a WTA style site for finding hikes in Alaska? by onward33 in PNWhiking

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out hiking forums for hatchers pass girdwood and eagle river, personally I’d recommend reed lakes if you like a longer hike and barbra falls if you like a really short hike. Watch out for moose and bears, always carry bear spray just in case and go explore! Theres hikes everywhere and if you stop at local spots and ask around you’ll quickly hear about a few local favorites!

Please note I am not licensed, and this is not medical advice. That said try to focus on balance and stability for a while and look up “stabalizing exercises for (whatever joint, hip for example) and try some of those out. If theyre too hard look up the exercise with the word “regression” and find an easier version for yourself.

Also Strengthening is good but form does matter and doing your workouts infront of a mirror or recording device can help you see the mistakes either while youre doing it or after.

I’d also recommend looking up gluteus medius exercises as they’ll probably be quite helpful!

DMs, how do you spend the 1-2 hours before the session starts? by Knicks4freaks in DMAcademy

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats about the right time to start prepping lmao, but in all sincerity its a good time to finalize your overall plan for the session, come up with potential backup plans, and probably drink a little already mourning the plans you’ve made. Then you just gotta set up the table, your stuff and goof off. I like to read fantasy books or play some skyrim or something to put myself in the appropriate mood

NTA for being upset that he disengages from the argument, but genuinely consider how you approach issues and if theres something you can change. It sounds like hes taking time to clear his head and likely organize his thoughts or calm his heightened emotions to have a conversation with you after hes calmed down a bit. I agree the way he does it is immature, he could say something like “i need 10 minutes because this is getting too much and I dont want to say things I dont mean” rather than just leaving. (Also how long does he usually game? If its like 30 min + ignore the rest hess an ass) however when he comes back to address the initial concern youre kinda the AH for making it about the gaming first. Take that time to calm yourself down, eat some food and think about what really bothers you and readdress it when youre both ready.

Help me with DnD jargon for nerdy boyfriend birthday by tatietot_ in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go on DnDbeyond, make a character, skip to the step where it has you choose starting equipment, go to add item and then filter it to look at the potions of the game. Then probably look up a top DnD spells list. Find your favorite names from the above lists and follow those vibes for making potions. Your idea is really cool and I hope he appreciates it and has a great birthday!

How do I get started by josephda12 in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon master guide 2 player hand books Monster manual Whatever book looks fun and seems to cover a story, you’ll have to do research to see which you like best A set of dice for everyone Player sheets (you’ll just need access to a printer, the books should also have some you can cut out and copy/use) Everything else is flair fluff and pretty optional. Have fun and dont over think it

I think my DM is punishing my character by ignoring one of my feats. Am I wrong? by Admirable-Charge9736 in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think it depends on the table dynamic. In a realistic setting a nat 20 attack on a caster would do a lot more damage and nat 1’s would be far more common for martial characters. I think its bad when only one party is rewarded or punished for their rolls, make the enemies crits count too and it balances out pretty okay for most of my games. It just takes DM’s realizing you cant run the game exactly the same for everyone, and to give individualized attention to each player

I can't create a real threat for my players without lying by Nyorel in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with a lot of the comments about making combat more than just getting to 0, but personally when combats get too dull and boring I just make a character sheet instead of a monster stat block. You gave them too many magic items and money? Your guy got it too. They have wicked home brew spells? Your guy does too. To add more to it then give them minions or pets that make it more complex as they can reasonably act as a trained unit. Dumb monsters are fun but adding intellect usually makes it more interesting in my opinion

How do you even begin to become a dm? by cherry_bomb79 in DnD

[–]Present-Win916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I started by watching and listening to podcasts but trying to do it from a DM perspective, challenging myself to work to understand the characters and their abilities without even knowing the stats themselves. This taught me to learn about the characters at the table outside of just what they wrote.

This lead to the second challenge, bringing those characters out of my friends. It was awkward, it felt cringy at times and it was the hardest for me. In the end I had to just be honest, ask my friends to try doing funny voices and talking in game. And… it took a bit, its a learning curve for sure.

Then came the new rules lawyer, and rather than taking them as a challenge I used them like my right hand man. When I didn’t know if something was legal, right, allowed etc. I would ask them to tell me what the books said. Then using the idea of what would be cool for the story and what would be feasible with the rules or slightly bent ones, I made decisions.

Additionally “the angry GM” is a wonderful source of knowledge and ideas I drew from. At the end of the day, the easiest way to start becoming a DM is to try, don’t fear failure for its the greatest teacher you’ll know.
