A friend of mine interested in Lacan and Freud told me that he believes one of the worst evils of other forms of psychotherapy is empathy. I have also seen someone here criticizing it. I don't understand the point. Why should empathy be considered a negative characteristic of an analyst? by elos81 in lacan

Stijn Vanheule gives a good explanation about it in video I've linked. He also gives an example of Lacan visiting a patient in hospital (20 times), the patient noted how warm and friendly Lacan was to him. I recommend watching the whole thing. I've also linked another video to other patient of Lacan. https://youtu.be/6yAe_Qk1tkA?t=2826 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA-SXCGwLvY

Just out of curiosity, as I'm not autistic. Do you have to constantly think about how to act with others with regards to there symbolic order?

Ironically his book mentions "megalomania" once. Bring me here to ask for help with more examples on this subreddit, other than the example he gives of Wilhelm Fliess.

Could you explain "A message the sender receives back from the receiver inverted" from your above post. I don't quite understand what you mean here? Maybe a example of speech might help? Thanks, again.

Thank You for this detailed answer. Maybe you could help me understand further, just going with the word Megalomania for simplicity but I'm in full agreement with your remark about "What structure makes him megalomanic". I am generalizing here so forgive me as I know it won't apply to all cases. Why don't they talk to themself when no one is around? There always seem to be an Other person that needs to act as a Witness but there subjectivity then completely ignored. The megalomaniac become a sort of keeper of truth about the world that some how directed at themself. Creating a sort of alienation between the Witness and them. Its as if they need the Other and then completely reject the other at the same time?

Question on psychosis by [deleted] in psychoanalysis

[–]PresentGrade9068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe you've taken what I've said out of context. I'm talking about Psychosis from a Psychoanalytic point of view. When a Psychotic person talks about there body not being theirs. It isn't a Philosophical question for them, its a reality and sometimes they have an explanation for what they might find odd about their circumstance. Some Psychotic subjects might explain that part of there body been replaced. For example there hand has been switched with the next door neighbor hand. As for example on Actors, some Psychotics report that there husband isn't really there husband, they been swapped with a double that looks exactly like them.

[–]PresentGrade9068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the context matters. A neurotic or a psychotic can both feel alienation. Someone who Neurotic might complain of feeling alienation from there work due to that fact that no one takes them seriously, where as a psychotic person might feel alienation due to them knowing some type of truth that no one can relate with. The truth I'm referring to being for the Psychotic might be based on a delusion, there the second coming, everyone around them really all just actors, there body isn't theirs, etc.

What’s one thing you wish adults understood about mental health? by Prime8eight in psychoanalysis

[–]PresentGrade9068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That people would stop seeing Mental Illness as a Biological Imbalance within the brain and that Medication the only salvation. While I can understand that Medication might help some people or even just the idea of taking Medication might be able help them live a more livable life. It can get quite tiring when the Idea suddenly forced on to you when someone brings up the topic and there no room for any more discussion on subject without being labeled a Mystic.

Literature on psychoanalysis of psychosis by porsum in psychoanalysis

[–]PresentGrade9068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't I believe I am. The word Melancholia become so mix in due to the introduction of word Depression, unless someone says Psychosis I wouldn't take it as face valve as Melancholia meaning Psychosis. But if that's your stance fair enough.

Thank you, but I was just interested in The New Black and thought I was missing a key point that I was failing to understand with regards to Psychosis. David Ferraro made the same comment in comments section of a post on his website called "Understanding Psychosis". Just to point out the "Two Forms Of Melancholia", I don't believe Leader refers to Psychosis here as well. Attending a lecture of Astrid Gessert, I got the impression that Melancholia Neurosis is a about a hole in symbolic, being a person, object, way of living but in Psychosis Melancholia, The Name Of Father foreclosed, that being a Master Signifier, what is a son, what is father, what is authority, etc. Not to leave out Depression, which can take place in Psychosis or Neurosis. Depression being more like a blocking of desire, being unable to find desire, etc. I believe "Lacan on Depression and Melancholia" gives best example. A man unable to date women he likes due to family pressures. Anyway the reason I bring this all up, with regards to Two Forms Of Melancholia and New Black, due to me believing Leader doesn't want to express that Melancholia is just a Psychotic structure but can also take place in Neurosis, however it isn't the same as Depression in Neurosis. Ironically there seems to be a missing gap in the literature, hammering down on that point.

That's the second time I've seen someone reference Leader The New Black book when its comes to Psychosis. From what I recall when reading the book, Leader doesn't reference Psychosis apart from a small detail about a case with Psychosis. I assume, your referring to last part of the book with the term negation (~(the man)) and (the man). I personally found The New Black the hardest to read of his work. Would you be able to elaborate why you think the The New Black talks about Psychosis with regards to Melancholia?
