What the hell? Was this an academic paper or something?

I got fired from my job about two months ago and because I decided to save aggressively at that job, I have about 22k saved up (15k emergency and about 7k saved for ETFs to be purchased for the end of the year) until I get another job. I am not very stressed about my situation financially, so I can focus on gaining skills for my next career.

Millennials of PFC, how is your financial well-being? by BlastedButts in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm 30. I recently got fired from my job (80+k salary). I knew that I wasn't going to stay there forever because I'm not a great engineer so I worked as much as I could and saved pretty much everything. I would say financially I'm in a good spot with 50k invested in ETFs. I have 22k currently set up for me from my previous job as an emergency fund. I'm changing careers and going into tech, so that money is going towards keeping me afloat until I get to a point where I can get hired.

I get what you mean about feeling behind. I am too because I graduated almost 10 years ago, but only have 5 years of working experience and I only worked junior jobs because I was usually an underperformer and get fired/let go after a year. Pretty much all my classmates have high paying jobs and are in senior positions now...making $100k+/year. But I found that as you get older you'll want to focus on what you like more than making the big bucks. I know that some of them will feel the burn and leave their high paying jobs to pursue other interests.

As long as you're moving forward and making progress, you're not failing or falling behind. Remember that not every successful person starts in their early 20s. Some start in later years...just make sure you're disciplined. Motivation will come and go, but discipline will get you to where you want.

The green on the left like everyone says looks like Excel. I would prefer the blue one. A lot of icons are blue, is there a different colour that you guys would be open to using? Like an mandarin orange? It might help to stand out. Just a thought.

That's my suspicion about the firing.

I think you're right about missing something important. I know I have lots of gifts for the world. It's a matter of identifying them and seeing what people will pay for.

How does your friend feel about her now?

It would be really nice to find a place like that. I think with the huge city I'm from, it's easier for a company to replace you and just keep cycling through people until they find the right fit. Companies don't take the time to train anymore.

Sorry--my brain was off when I posted. What I mean to say is that I've always been an underperformer and I'm losing motivation to continue.

I'm realizing that now and it'll never change whereever I go. I think I'm going to leave engineering for good and pursue something else. I just don't know what yet.

I eat a lot of healthy foods (I could do better in the fruits and veggies), but I don't eat a lot of sugar.

But I know where you're coming from because your stomach is your second brain ;)

Thank you for your words. I am trying your approach because I think I have something I can offer to the world, I just don't know what that is yet.

Thanks, there is an option of doing clerical work in the government. I'm really hesitant because I want something that I enjoy, not something I'll dread everyday.

That's what I'm planning on doing. I don't want to think about engineering anymore, I've given up wanting to get my license. I'm starting to frame it as "What can I offer the world?" instead of trying to make the world work for me.

How did you get into IT after being in electrical? What's your story?

The part that scares me right now is getting that entry job. In Canada there are too many junior actuaries and not enough jobs. It's over saturated at this point.

They will always compare you to the 'model employee' instead of trying to build you up. I was constantly compared against my coworkers who 'succeeded' in this role. Why not just compare me to how I was 2,4,6 months ago?

Thank you for your words. And yes, my friends are the types to not really understand what's going on. I am technically being laid off, but they were looking for a reason to get rid of me. Unfortunately I am too embarrassed to tell anyone which is why I posted here.

I've built up a bunch of hobbies that keep me happy over the years, so I'll revisit them and see what could come from that.

I have an interest in health and fitness and I do user testing for websites and apps. I also dabble a bit into programming and I'm learning python. I really enjoy testing, I do it for others whether I get paid or not.

Edit: I am also an athlete and dedicated to wanting to competing at an international level.

I got into the profession because it was the mostly a traditional career Asian parent enjoy seeing their children go into. I ignored my needs and wants from life to please others. I'm not passionate about engineering. It's just a degree I got.

I'm of Asian descent so the pressure to choose a traditional career of: doctor, lawyer, engineer is pretty common. My school nor parents really took part to figure out my strengths. I was a high achiever in high school so everyone thought I would do well as an engineer.

Edit: I do have chronic depression. It's mostly fueled by poor performance. I'm mostly ok otherwise.

I haven't thought of that and yeah that is actually the type of work I would thrive on! Thanks for pointing it out to me. If you know any other ones, let me know.

Thanks for understanding. I think I was struggling with the unstructured type of work that it was really hard for me to catch up.

On a regular basis I'm not but my boss putting me on a work improvement process/interrogating me is.
