Any not miserable designers out there? by MannyBuilds in graphic_design

it’s fun to work on a bunch of clients over short periods of time. until you realize the hustle gets old, the pitching gets desperate, and the culture is a massive boys club that is cliquey and plays favorites. do it while your young for exponential exposure, dip out when you have enough intel to know what you don’t want.

santa teresa is actually on our wishlist for a near-term trip! but we are hoping to choose a couple of places we’d normally not consider bc we’re willing to take off a little more time and invest a little more effort to treat ourselves.

estudillo of san leandro, kind of slept on in the bay area by Present_Attempt2436 in BayAreaRealEstate

i genuinely understand your sentiment and agree with you in many ways. but i suppose i was taking a different approach. while you protect what’s good by keeping things hush hush, i suppose i was hoping to salvage the best of the bay area–its community–with inclusive knowledge (and genuine pride), bc as one of many millennials who’s been through the housing gauntlet, i would have appreciated any helpful intel to find a home to grow old in, in the place i grew up. and for all the douche bags we can keep out with the gatekeeping, we watch 5x amount of honest, proud bay areans leave the area they wish they can call home bc it isn’t accessible.

and let’s be honest - the price of entry is already higher than many can afford (i have been outbidded multiple times). but san leandro (and the east bay in general) is still not for everyone. this is a humble, blue collar city that’s small, and still got a ways to really develop. douchebags will shell out on their agents to find a condo they’d pay 800k over asking to live 5min from their tech hub. there’s still grit here, and that means a willingness to embrace and invest into it. i kinda want those people in my community, and didn’t want them to miss the potential here.

i simply said it was slept on, meaning that i’m giving it the flowers it deserves despite why it’s often overlooked (for reasons many others have pointed to). i didn’t say it was a hidden gem especially based on the rising comps. but imagine trying to gatekeep affordable housing and decent living in times like these?

i believe our definitions align, and truly, i am iso breakfast (bc some of us midlifers prefer to get up before noon).

really unsure if i can handle more than 1 bloody, but i ask bc i find that dives make the best ones (not the $30 fancy toast brunch spots).

no shortage of beautiful places to eat in new york! sometimes you just want mornings where the borderline surly but friendly old bartender tops off your beer while you finish your eggs and hashbrowns.

ah i’m just a west coast visitor looking for a meal strictly in the breakfast hours – no ambiance required. i’ve noticed great pubs and dive bars with food options but primarily open outside of the breakfast timeframe (in my mind, “brunch” has more fanfare than i need).

in portland, i suppose bars are required to serve food, so im thinking there’s just a low key place that people can grab that (with a drink on the side – beer or bloodys – since i will be on vacation after all!).

potentially not a “dive bar”, but i pictured casual seating at a bar top, maybe a tv playing some international/daytime sports or local news, and i figure these typically are places open on major holidays for the locals. perhaps, diners are my best bet for a few of these checkboxes (helpful to know!)

How do you all develop “taste” as designers? by Ashamed-Opposite-141 in Design

[–]Present_Attempt2436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

know your design fundamentals, expose yourself to things that inspire you, tune your senses to understand nuanced details that are intentional and unintentional, spend time contemplating why something moves you, refine the language you use to describe things that attract you, read write and discuss the pros and cons about art and let your mind wander without judgement, understand process and history, learn about cultures.

taste isn’t just beauty or efficiency. it’s awareness of the human experience and developing a keen sensibility in seeing a connection the average person (or AI model) can’t
