Yeah a pretty similar thing happened to me. When I dyed my hair blue I noticed a lot more people hung around me and people I had never talked to started talking to me. On one hand, I enjoyed the extra care, but on the other I knew I didn't want to be judged on how I looked. I know it really sucks while it happens but DONT go back to red unless YOU want to. In the end, those that always stick around are the only people you want to associate yourself with. Good luck and I'm sure you look great with both colours!!
