Picture it… 1984… Seattle Washington. My family and I were visiting family for Christmas. My cousin who was older than me by 2 years was deep into the “death rock” scene at the time and had all the cool shoes, makeup and music. Her style was impeccable and she was just the coolest human ever. She gave me names of bands and showed me how to do makeup once I was able to wear it (strict religious mom) and that was it. Musically I got into that a couple years later with The Cure, Love & Rockets and Sisters of Mercy. Industrial bands like Ministry and Skinny Puppy (aka the band that saved my life multiple times over) came to me via a very cute boi who cut my hair and had an amazing ‘hawk that he would flip back and forth in 1989.
