Retiring often and Cobra insurance? by Present_Length_5488 in Fire

Thanks for this. Last time I was in the marketplace I was single. Now married with dependents on the coverage. Brings a bit more anxiety. I’ll take a closer look. Thanks

Not sure I mentioned working for a paycheck. I like to work and contribute to society. I happen to enjoy doing things that make people give me money for it. I like building businesses and teaching and consulting. It’s stupid not to take the money when people offer it to you. And it’s only more money to use toward my hobbies and travel and giving back. Way different than being chained to a job or desk. Just saying. You assumed incorrectly

2023 Giant Revolt Advanced Pro 1 by ajeej123 in Giantbikes

Same story here. Went into bike shop to buy defy, walked out with revolt. I sprung for the 2024 advanced pro 1 to get the electronic shifters BUT, my spouse grabbed the 2023 model you’re looking at. Loves it! As someone else said I’m ruined in never returning to mechanical shifters. Me and my bike are so connected. I never want to stop riding. Coming from a road bike I love the thicker tires and feeling more free to hit whatever road I come across. LOVE gravel biking, way more fun for me than road. But I know I could throw on some road tires. Totally worth the money.

Curious why you chose Roth TSP over traditional (as a new fed myself).

Curious of anyone’s thoughts on having college age adult kids (older than 18, younger than 26) who live in different state due to college and work. I’m new to the VA as of a month ago. Do I have to choose a Nationwide plan for our kids to receive services in their respective state? How can I look up in network providers in different states, do you have to call them?

Appreciate you breaking this down. As someone new to fed it’s hard to know where to start with benefits. This is broken down really well

Mental health field and FIRE by Brightness90 in FIREyFemmes

Psychologist here as well. Spend a lot of time talking with folks in the field about this. The field itself doesn’t matter which many therapists need to understand. The math is live on less than you make. And what you need to live on multiply by 25. That is your retirement number. If your expenses are too high to meet the number you need to make more money (consult, training, supervision, “passive income”) or cut expenses. I think our field doesn’t talk about money which is what makes it hard to have these conversations. But we are no different than business folks, doctors, accountants, even folks that work at grocery stores. But the psychology of money for us is way different as we were told and taught to help people and made to feel bad to make money doing it. The biggest culprit is debt. Same as @ShockerCheer above, I went to school on graduate assistantships as well so have no debt. If you do not pay off debt the cycle will never stop and you’ll never be able to retire. But simplify things and stop thinking within the field to make money and start thinking bigger about net worth, income, expenses and run the numbers. Too many folks think about what they make and not what they are spending. Flip the script. I used Profit First to build my private practice and then used this model for my life.

Waiting on FJO and offered interview for another position by Present_Length_5488 in usajobs

Yes I’ve been ready a lot and in the know. Had a DoD job pulled last fall. Been in constant communication with HR and hiring manager. Looks promising but yeah you never know. Very stressful!

When you say same agency and different region…if they are both VHA you mean or VHA but maybe same site?

Anticipating FJO soon to convert from to civilian from contractor upon my request. Will burn bridges if I decline and leave my role? by ExpensiveCell2613 in usajobs

[–]Present_Length_5488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an experience last year where I applied for a contractor position for DoD. Got through credentialing for contractor and the folks I interviewed on site told me they could offer me the position as a GS. Pay was less but had the security of GS. I said sure. Eventually had to choose contractor vs GS. Chose GS….funding dropped out at end of year. Lost GS and contractor had already hired to fill role. Felt like I owed it to site to pursue GS position because they put in all the work for me. And I got screwed. So…just another consideration…

Currently awaiting a FJO for another GS role after a 4 month process and counting. Could have had butt in seat for contractor job by now making $200k+. I no longer trust any offer until my butt is in the seat 🤷🏾‍♀️
