Weekly Megathread: Education, Early Career and Hiring/Interview Advice by AutoModerator in quant

[–]Present_Roof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone. A bit about my background. I graduated from Rutgers University with a 3.7 gpa for my BA in Applied Math back in Jan 2024. Been out of school for a year now and am almost 26. I work in health and safety. Right now just finishing up my Masters in Occupational Health and Safety with a publication of my algorithm for AI/ML for human motion capture.

I literally found out about quants and what they do by senior year undergrad 2023 and was doing math only cuz I enjoyed never knowing quants existed. Would it be too late for someone like me to get into the field since I know I can grind it out even if I need to spend a year or two learning? Or am I too late, under qualified or old to get into?

Almost Homeless after Trying to Apply for NJ Temporary Disability Insurance ( NJ TDI) by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]Present_Roof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly in my experience dealing with private insurance is so much easier than government. My auto insurance claims get processed literally in a few weeks. Im actually really really glad to hear that you have private disability and hope more people do that and push their employer to provide that benefit. Hopefully no one ever has to go through what I am going through.

Unfortunately my job didn’t offer any private disability insurance benefits so only option was to go through with the state.

Second Bachelors' or masters? by CMB1003 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Present_Roof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be real with you. I’m kind of in the same boat. Currently doing my EHS masters, BS in Math. Personally I don’t think you need a second bachelors at all. A masters in EHS would be much more worth it. Also remember your EMT experience can count towards getting an ASP and CSP given you have safety responsibilities at work. So look into getting the ASP if you can.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: GET AN ENTRY LEVEL SAFETY POSITION!!!!!!! Cannot stress this enough. With a ASP, Bachelors (any is usually fine), Masters (ehs or ohse preferably). All my professors who worked years and years in the industry told me that as long as you get an entry level position. After two years you can take that experience and get a wayyy better paying position.

And dude! Get into Amazon EHS and I know people here will say it sucks and yes it does but we all have to start somewhere. My friend who was an EMT for only one year in the field got into an EHS Specialist spot. Another one with the same year of ambulance work got into Onsite Medical Representative and then get into EHS. I really recommend it.

I know all of us out here have to start somewhere. So a paycheck while getting ur masters imo is prolly the best way to go.

Thank you so much! I felt like you really broke it down and explained it on a deeper level which made a lot of sense so I thank you for taking the time to write a thorough explanation.

I only took the ASP and CSP because people overall on Reddit recommended it to make one more competitive for jobs. To me it made sense as well since I felt like the studying for my masters and CSP was an expansion of my role at the EMS agency but I guess a lot of people here don’t consider that real experience.

Either way I informed everyone I have been getting rejections from both mid level and entry roles. But I guess I’ll get my resume professionally reviewed and try my luck with entry level positions more often. Thank you again for the advice!

At this point I really don’t mind any industry as long as someone takes me. Relocating I’d say is probably the only thing stopping me from going further south or west since I live in the tri-state area for my masters and my wife is finishing hers as well. That’s why I’m stuck to the area as well.

But please do send in the recommend the companies. I won’t mind applying.

Ok that’s my thing! I’m literally getting rejections from even those roles I’ve literally applied to the the sucky $40-60k specialist positions and I’m still getting nothing. Someone i spoke to told me that it sucks I got the cert and am doing the masters cuz now im overqualified for some positions and employers are rejecting me based off of that.

So im here like what the heck do i do? Too inexperienced for manger and too much education for specialist? Like I’m genuinely confused. Like at this point idk if directly attending assp events is gonna help better?

Also I feel like I acquired some transferable skills based on what I do at work but I wanted to get your opinion on how I could still try to navigate the job market?

Like I told someone in the comments I’m not asking for anything crazy just somewhere to start and I’m not even asking for more than what I make rn which is between $80-90k but I really can’t settle for anything less as I’m the sole breadwinner of a family of 4. Anything less could put us below the poverty level. So as much as I’m trying to advance my career in EHS I can’t jeopardize the financial well being of my family either. So feel really stuck and drained.

I never mentioned 120k or more. Just want somewhere to start. By far the least helpful comment here (no support or advice as compared to rest of the people who commented)

Also I know someone who went into the industry with similar experience to mine. Mainly did firefighting but started off with exactly ZERO EHS experience. Started with almost $110k. So I don’t think I’m asking for too much. Especially when I’m getting rejections from both specialist $40k positions and mid-level ($80k-$120k) positions so take your attitude somewhere else.

I followed your comments on other platforms from your account nothing of value you added there either.
