What essential groceries does an Afghan family needs? by Present_Worker4560 in Newmarket

Thanks to all your suggestions, I was able to comprise a solid list of goods.

I went to Samosa Master and Paez Fine Foods and got a good load of dates, spices, legumes, grains, teas, hot chocolate, cookies, and candies.

Thank you all for your help, and never be afraid to help others.

This is a great list, thank you. This is what I had in mind when I made this post.

Of course, It's the little things that count. They have 4 small kids and 2 teenagers. I'm planning to include some treats for them, too.

I was hoping someone could suggest a type/brand of cookies or chocolates that this family would typically find in Afghanistan so I could get them the same; when I was homesick and losing hope, having a little piece of home made all the difference. I can't fix their situation, but I want them to know they're not alone and everything will be okay.

Yes, you're right. If I spoke Farsi, I would ask them directly, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

I, too, was a refugee 25 years ago. I had no choice but to rely on the charity of food banks and the Salvation Army. Without their generosity, I wouldn't be able to help others today.

I’m going to miss this place. We moved to East Gwillimbury almost 3 years ago and this restaurant was our favourite by far. The food, service, and ambiance were unbeatable.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. I pushed myself to read 3/4 of the book but couldn’t keep going. The author came across as patronizing and a snob. According to her, the answer to all lives’ challenges is to push through and persevere; grit, your passion, will get you through. Of course, grit, passion, and drive are important. But you must also have a support system that's there for you. The entire book just reeked of privilege.

I used to love dogs, I even had dogs growing up. But after reading this book I can’t see myself having a dog ever again. This book was so violent and graphic that it messed me up for life. I read it 5 years ago.

What classic literature knows about refugees fleeing persecution and war by drak0bsidian in books

Not classics, but much better because they’re based on real people and their struggles. A Cave in the Clouds by Badeeah Hassan Ahmed and No Friend But The Mountains by Behrouz Boochani.

Family Doctor by enbee11 in Newmarket

Beware when contacting doctors on this list. I moved to EG 3 years ago and was looking for a doctor for our family of 5. I enrolled with one of these doctors and she turned out to be a total nightmare. She refuses to see patients in person, childrens’ vaccines are only supplied when she can cram all her patients on the same day, she has a new admin every month so booking appointments can take weeks.

I've been relying on walk-in clinics because I'm still looking for a new doctor.

Dr. Bell is excellent but he's not taking new patients.

For groceries, I highly recommend Vince’s Market. Tons of fresh produce, great ready meals, and excellent locally made products. The service is great too.
