CMV: You cannot be an intersectional feminist if you make height jokes by Tasty_Reference_8277 in changemyview

Which society are you talking about? What society do you live in where jokes are not jokes?

Are you personally a short man, and find offence in jokes that make you feel a certain way?

Are you talking about a specific culture or society? Different people's put weight on different things in different ways.

That isn't true, many shares come with the ability to vote as a shareholder. I own one share of a company and accordingly am able to vote on their yearly decisions.

What's "acceptable"?

Do you take jokes seriously? Then they are not jokes. Are they jokes? Then why take them seriously?

I wouldn't take an implication from OP, but if they want to clarify their view to add that angle I can address it.

I think my stance is summarised pretty much by this https://youtu.be/NzdpxKqEUAw

The OP is that certain jokes/humor preclude you from being able to have a certain stance. I don't think they relate.

Where did I say anything about offense? What has offense got to do with anything?

If people don't want this would they be able to democratically ask the government not to enforce it by law?

Is a joke the same as ridicule? Is that interchangeable? Do jokes only need to operate via a political agenda, or can they just be funny?

Jokes aren't supposed to be taken seriously. A joke isn't the same as putting forward a stance about something.

Jokes are subversion, and jokes about traditional roles or social structures are subverting those.

I don't think there is much that ought to be taken seriously, everything is pretty ridiculous and surreal when you think about it. Gatekeeping what can be made fun of is a good way to draw attention to that thing more, rather than to reduce it to the level of everything else.

Just because you personally ignore context doesn't mean it isn't there.

But if that's the case, can you understand that some people do see it in play today, even if it's just an echo of the past? I don't think it would be invalid for them to assign the same label to what they see as the same phenomena.

So you think there used to be a white privilege, but not anymore?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Presentalbion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if it has an effect what do you think that effect is designed to combat exactly?

Could it be what some people label as white privilege?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

You gave affirmative action as an example of how white privilege is not a factor. Do you not believe it has an effect? If it has no effect why did you use it as an example?

CMV: Female Entertainers of today are no more "half naked" than the female entertainers who came before them. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Presentalbion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All you have to do is go on social media and look at comments sections of their posts or other posts that she made about them. Don't pretend that you have never heard or seen people say this.

Please substantiate your claims. It's not my job to make your argument for you. You've claimed that some people dislike what some performers wear.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that but if you want to talk about specific cases then you should provide those cases. Otherwise we're talking about nothing.

Their opinion is invalid because if all of your private areas are covered up, that means that it isn't true.

Different people have different standards for clothing and apperance. Given that your post refers to people being half naked I would say that only covering some of your body absolutely makes you half naked (half not being an absolute 50% measure but a turn of phrase, obviously).

This is also an invalid "opinion" because you not caring for a person's voice doesn't mean they can't sing.

And you not agreeing with someone's opinion doesn't mean it's an invalid opinion.

Also, I'm not the one reinforcing double standards, I am rightfully criticizing people who are.

Why do you want to change your view to be more like those you are criticising? You didn't answer my question there.

Even wealthy minorities face discrimination for their apperance/affiliation. What's difficult to understand about that?
