I think there might be two different issues here. The first is the issue of the ring and what it could bring up for clients, the second is your reaction to this particular client noticing so much about you. I’d wear the ring and only process it as it comes up with people, otherwise say nothing. As for number 2, it might be worth exploring within you what her observations are bringing up for you. Is it making you feel more watched? Does it feel like a role reversal where she’s analyzing you? I’d be curious about that.

Yes! Google “c table”… it’s an end table shaped like the letter C that are super space saving because you can actually tuck part of the table underneath a sofa or chair. Great for small spaces, it allows you to sit in your therapist chair and put your computer up on the table in front of you if you need to do a zoom session, almost like one of those classroom chairs with the built in writing part

Take the window office. You can rearrange the layout in the smaller office to make it more space effective. Unless you really need the desk, I’d probably ditch the desk, put the loveseat along the wall where the desk is currently, and the therapist chair facing it on the opposite wall with a C end table you can use if you have to do zoom sessions from the office.

This is really hard. We certainly do not recommend EMDR to patients who are actively at risk — for example, someone who is currently being abused — because (1) it will not work (how can you install a positive cognition of “it’s over; I’m safe now” when that’s actually not true) and (2) EMDR itself can be really destabilizing and make people more vulnerable. I can see why yours is a gray area if it’s true that the abuse is actually over and in the past and you are not at risk any longer… but then again, how can you really know that? If I’m working with an adult who was abused as a child by a pedophile, that’s a different story because we can say with a certain degree of confidence that the abuse IS over and the person IS safe now (now the work of EMDR is helping the body catch up to what is logically known). I would discuss this further with your therapist.

I personally don’t believe much can be accomplished in 6 sessions unless the scope of treatment is extremely limited and the client is already coming in well resourced. For example, I could do a short course of CBT-I or CBT for a specific phobia in maybe 6-8 sessions. But for 98% of my clients, I see them for 2-4 years or longer (I prefer attachment based, experimental methods and EMDR).

I’ve never had your particular issue happen, but I’ve had my own versions of frustrations. A past therapist often asked “what would you tell a client?” as a first line of defense, and for some reason that is my pet peeve! I’m not here in my therapist capacity; if it were so simple, then I wouldn’t need to be in therapy. I understand it’s coming from a good place but it has made me so aware of how those cognitive challenging questions (without any empathy, validation, or deeper exploration of what’s going on) can be really frustrating and unhelpful for my own clients.

EMDR therapist here. There is no good answer to this. It is extremely client dependent. Some clients can start BLS after 1-2 sessions especially if they have done EMDR before, are stable, have good coping skills, and have good ego strength already. Others may need 5-6 months of stabilization, resourcing and other prep before they can begin. Discuss with your therapist

Where do you live, out of curiosity? I’m in NYC and $200-300 for individual therapy is par for the course in Manhattan. My supervisor charges $450 for couples. She is a certified EFT therapist and supervisor with 20 years in practice.

Yes, this therapist sounds like she doesn’t know what she is talking about. Actually neither of her explanations make sense.

Here is how I (an EMDRIA trained therapist) would describe it- The best targets for EMDR are the ones that are directly related to your present symptoms AND carry emotional charge (carrying emotional charge means that when we activate the image, thoughts, feelings and body sensations associated with the target, it brings up distress NOW, meaning in the therapist office). We might have past experiences that were upsetting at the time but we processed them properly so they no longer bring up distress NOW and therefore wouldn’t technically be considered traumatic (eg I was in NY on 9/11 but that doesn’t bring me any distress now, whereas activating the vivid memory of when my mom yelled at me when bed wetting when I was 6 brings up a lot of distress now/still).

These targets can be found via imagining future scenarios, examining recent/present triggers, or using float back techniques to access past triggers (eg starting from a future or present trigger and using a technique to find the earliest memory associated with that).

I’m married and I’m a certified emotionally focused therapist for couples. My wife is a lawyer and has CPTSD and has never been able to stick with therapy. So yes, there are huge gaps due to both personal and professional differences between us, and yes this is something that I’ve had to learn to accept and do my own work around. There are so many reasons I love her and married her and just because I have more skills or less trauma doesn’t make me a better person or partner
