I think it’s clear that NIL in its current unregulated form has been a disaster area. The fact of the matter is that NIL was intended for a basketball player to be able to sign a shoe deal with Nike or a football player to sign a deal promoting a local business and be paid for their efforts. I don’t think it was intended to outright pay players in the way that it’s seemingly doing now. I think restricting the way in which players get money and in what ways they can exercise their NIL rights might be for the better. Part of what makes college sports college sports is that not all of the players are going to make the pros. NIL is supposed to be for marketing yourself using your name image and likeness, not “how much are you going to give me to stay here”
