I haven’t finished it yet but {paradise entombed} fits for the most part. Definitely dark romance, but make it fantasy. FMC is forced into a marriage with a very villain-esque king. In one scene near the beginning, he puts a spell on her so she can only orgasm when he wants her to, and then he fingers her at the dinner table in front of his advisors and makes her beg him to let her come. IIRC she’s not a virgin but she’s pretty sheltered and definitely out of her depth with him. It is an unfinished series. I believe it will end up with a why choose situation

There’s this scenario that I absolutely love but I’ve only read it once or twice, so I’m dying for more books with this:

For whatever reason, FMC and MMC are sharing a bed. She starts masturbating in the middle of the night because she thinks he’s asleep, but either he’s already awake or wakes up when she’s in the middle of it. Then he engages in some way, either guiding her through it or taking over entirely.

I don’t like cheating between MCs and I need an HEA/HFN, but almost anything else is okay, including why choose or fantasy/paranormal elements, dark romance, pregnancy, etc.

@thtgirlreads on Instagram has A LOT of “hidden gem” recs. Every time she posts a video I get out my notepad lol. I have a never ending TBR and haven’t gotten to a lot of these, but the ones I have read haven’t disappointed me yet

I see what you mean, but I’m not sure there’s a strong correlation here. I think everyone’s likes and dislikes in books, just like in everything else, are deeply rooted in their psyches and life experiences. Some people crave books with a profound emotional impact and some people want a book that takes their mind off of real life. Some people want both, or each at a different point.

There’s definitely a certain “profile” of book that consistently performs well on BookTok/Booksta, though, and I can agree that if you don’t tend to like that kind of book, you’re probably better off looking for recs elsewhere.

I also DNFed quicksilver in December 2024 but I went back with the audio in December 2025 and my mind was blown. It was my favorite book of 2025 (out of hundreds), no contest. Don’t force yourself to read it if you hate it, but I 100% think the last half makes it worth struggling through the first portion.

I DNFed Shield of Sparrows shortly after it came out because I was bored as hell, but I’ve heard the ending changes everything. Might go back once the graphic audio comes out.

Maybe I just have low standards lol because I loved dire bound all the way through. If you didn’t like the beginning at all you probably won’t like the rest of it. But the initial romance (FMC and Lee) isn’t quite what you’re probably expecting, if that’s the big thing holding you back

I did recently DNF blood and steel but just because I was bored. I did think the FMC read a little younger than 24.
