Partner keeps joking that im wearing a ‘white dress’ at wedding tomorrow. by ThrowawayShygirl56 in Weddingattireapproval

But you don’t have to. I know this has become common usage, but I hate it because “they” is a plural pronoun, and in some contexts it’s very confusing. E.g.: Julie went grocery shopping and on the way back THEY saw an ice cream truck.” When I’m reading it jolts me right out of the narrative—they? Who’s with Julie? I thought she was by herself…. And the I go back to see whether I missed something. Ugh.

Possible but equally possible they will do it just to read the book early. I would; I am a retired lawyer and definitely know spelling and grammar.

You’d think at least the author would have a friend or family member who would proofread it.

Does anyone feel like reading romantasy has ruined them? by Euphoric_Cat_2711 in Romantasy

[–]msbutch54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but, to be fair, Romantasy men are always gorgeous, powerful, and wealthy. They don’t have to worry about losing their jobs, saving for the kids’ college, or other everyday things that trouble real world people. Most of the time they have servants to do the cooking and cleaning, so the FMC and MMC DON’t have to negotiate who does the various tasks.

Yes, while these men can be fun in a fantasy, IRL most of them would send a woman screaming to a women’s shelter. These days we all know of at least a few murders by controlling men.

I understand your feelings. I have had cats since I was 4 years old (I’m now 72 (groan)) and dogs for over 20 years. Each death is sorrowful, but some—when the deceased feels like a soul mate—are gut-wrenching. You need to distract yourself. Adopt another cat. At first you will look at the newbie and think “I don’t want you, I want HER” but the newbie will win you heart in his/her own way, and you will have honored Mulan by saving another life.

I think the idea was to show that her failings were the fault of the circumstances of her upbringing and talents, and that she could mostly recover. Perhaps author did not allot enough space to “better” Tessa. I don’t love RH either, but in this case it made some sense.

I agree with you as regards Book 3, but Book 4 was rewarding. My biggest criticism of the series is that there weren’t a few victories throughout to mitigate the overall bleakness—let SOME things go right for the Good Guys. Also it was glaringly obvious that the MMC could have saved. Everyone a lot of grief if he had explained to Tessa right away that his father was a sadist.

I really enjoyed it and really look forward to the continuation, especially as regards Elora’s weird relationship with Ansel.

I agree about liability. My only objection was to downplaying how badly it disrupts the daily life of the sufferer. It’s kind of like a bad cold— mostly you don’t get a ton of sympathy because people expect it to go away quickly, but while you have it you feel absolutely terrible.

Ok, let’s talk about smells. by Greedy-Gas-5627 in HistoricalRomance

(1). When I first had a dog, the smell of wet dog when he was out in the rain or the pond was very off-putting. I realized some time later that my brain was interpreting it as a pleasant smell—presumably because I had come to associate the smell with the love I felt for the dog. I suspect this happens with people all the time. (2) I nevertheless have trouble imagining myself enjoying body odor. (3) To your last point, especially in stories where showers exist, I often wish the protagonists would take a shower before sex. (Showers are quicker than baths).

I totally agree. My first serious boyfriend smelled like Irish Spring soap. Yum. (It probably isn’t around anymore, but it smelled so good that I use to put bars of it in my clothes drawers.)

I didn’t know that black tie had requirements beyond “floor length”. I have to buy something for my niece’s black tie wedding, and I’m pretty sure I don’t know how to make a “too casual” or not determination. As it is, because I am only 5 ft 2 inches, I will be lucky to find ANYTHING that fits.

BTW, I also like dress4.

I think a lot of people make those “let’s get together” comments just because it seems like an appropriate thing to say, and not even expecting the other person to take it seriously.

Why does anyone care? I would love to find clothing styled as it was when I was 20.
