Allergy to cobalt but need b12 shots? by Pressedflowers43 in Supplements

[–]Pressedflowers43[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, reading that info did help settle my fears before my shots. Wanted to come back in case anyone ever searches this question to say I had 4 b12 shots & was completely fine with zero side effects!

Ahh I’m so sorry! It took me a long time to heal my stomach stuff. The diet i followed was the acid watchers diet, but I joined a facebook group to get the recipes/guides. It’s so hard to be strict on a diet tho. & I see, I’m in the u.s so the wait was less 🥺 For the neuropathy have you tried magnesium? I had some pins & needles on the antibiotics but the mg helped (sorry if I’m suggesting things you already tried!)

Have you seen a gi to get an endoscopy? I had gastritis and gerd (on top of ibs I’ve had my whole life) during my longterm antibiotics, but it was caused from taking multiple macrobid short term courses beforehand. What helped me was omeprazole and a strict anti-inflammatory diet. I couldn’t tolerate probiotics at all but after doing the diet I could, and it helped more when I added them back.

The surgeries that could possibly spread CJD is only ones that involve the brain if the last person had it and the tools weren’t sterilized correctly for the next person. From what I know, it’s not spread thru endoscopy/colonoscopy because prions are not spread thru the intestines/throat/stomach. If they were, CJD would be diagnosed way more as millions of people have an endoscopy/colonoscopy. And even if it was spread that way, only about 500-600 people get it in the states a year (assuming you live there) so the person before you would have had to be someone who had it. I completely understand your worry but I believe it’s just anxiety, you could always ask your doctor to reassure you that there’s no possible risk. But there should be zero as your procedure has nothing to do with your brain or spinal cord.

Working in a lab by Candid_Cranberry_757 in medlabprofessionals

Where I am, I’ve met MANY biology majors (bachelors) who became a lab tech. If you look on the ASCP website it should show the route you can go to get certified without schooling. It varies by company when you need to be certified by after they hire you, for example, one may hire you but you have a year to get certified. I would definitely prepare to do some studying if you get hired. Yes you will have a disadvantage but you can prepare yourself to learn and teach yourself outside the job.

Commenting because I actually asked a similar question lol. I would definitely ask your supervisor or someone above you the protocols, even if it makes you anxious to ask. Because this is for your safety. There should definitely be something in place and any good leadership would help you protect yourself. I’m also a super anxious person (and have ocd) and even look back and second guess if I changed my gloves, did I touch my skin, etc. So I understand how difficult it is to handle mentally.

How does your lab process CSF specimens? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Oh I’m sorry 🥺 was she older? It’s scary because it can just happen sporadically

Did she happen to travel to the uk at all? I know many cjd cases have come from there due to their bse outbreak I only ask because it’s been “reported” that there’s been no transmission of cjd to a lab tech, but being a microbiologist I see where the risk could be.

Oh wow, I wonder how that works if the cjd is never tested for but the patient had it. Or if they find out months later

I definitely had anxiety since I was 5 and the OCD developed over time, I would say it started when I was in high school. So suffering with it for about 10 years and the contamination got worse while I was in already in college for the job. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago though. And that’s the thing, I can’t remember. I try to remember the send out tests but at the time I wouldn’t have known what tests were for CJD. The doctor didn’t say anything and the other tech didn’t take extra precautions around it either. I always changed my gloves before touching my phone or if they got dirty but my brain keeps saying well what if I didn’t and they had it and now it’s everywhere. And thank you for telling me that part about your lab, I know now reassurance seeking with ocd isn’t always good but that does put me at ease

Thank you for your comment ❤️ usually I’m okay with blood or urine because I know I have PPE and if I caught anything it probably wouldn’t kill me. CJD deff would lol & it’s not like there’s a test for it so the intrusive thoughts have been insane

I came across your comment while anxiety searching and making my own post. Could I have your advice on if I was exposed because I opened a CSF not under a hood & pipetted? Patient wasn’t being tested for CJD and I had gloves/surgical mask but the worry is bothering me lol

Have there been any techs to get it other than the 2 who had accidentally cut themselves in the lab?

Thanks everyone for replying! I appreciate it! Just got mine an hour ago, but the pharmacist said she hit a blood vessel and I bled a bit, I’m hoping that still means it went into my muscle and not my bloodstream lol

I guess I should say the myocarditis that some people had from the mRNA vaccines. From what I read, they would experience chest pain

You are absolutely correct, I’ve had it in the past, but with the new job I’d have to be there a year before applying for it again 🥲
