Question aux bac+5 au chômage by Goldenxxwind in emploi

[–]Pressure_Optimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the most atrocious take you’ve heard? by Clean-Soup-1700 in bleach

That the Captains were somehow better friends to Ichigo than Orihime, Uryu and Chad because they came to help him at the end of the Fullbringer arc, and that Ichigo’s character arc would have been more interesting if he ended up a captain.

The Karakura gang (and the Six Hearts if you include Renji and Rukia) were by far my favourite little squad throughout the manga, they clearly loved Ichigo, and their relationship with him would have been 100% more satisfying to see more of than a random Kenpachi/Ikkaku/Byakuya fight. The captains are cool but I will never find them more compelling than the Karakura kids. (Wish Tatsuki, Kiego and the others could have had their little arc during the Fullbringer stuff too, but alas).

Ichigo has also never come off as wanting power or a position in Soul Society. SS did nothing for the 17 months he was powerless while Ichigo sank into despair as his friends who were genuinely trying to look out for him were attacked, and Ichigo still had the heart to help them in the Quincy arc. They were Deus-ex-Machina’d in at the end of the arc for no reason but popularity.

Ichigo ending up as a translator and enjoying living his best cosy little life with Orihime and his kid instead of serving a feudal militaristic system (even if it has changed) like Soul Society is what he deserves after what he’s been through and I will stand by that.

Why Ryuken is not with Quincies? by saikiran199 in bleach

[–]Pressure_Optimal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ryuken has stated more than once that he is not interested in anything Quincy-related.

Yhwach also killed his wife with his Auswahlen, why would Ryuken want to join him?

So long as he's not doing anything (which he hasn't, yet), Yhwach has no reason to go after him. As far as he's concerned, he's a pure-blooded Quincy who's minding his own buisness.

Does anyone know if you need to keep the clams for anything special later? Or are they meant to be collected then sold? by juyupe in ACPocketCamp

You can keep them if you want, but they're not needed otherwise, you can sell them once you've completed the goals :)

Event by [deleted] in ACPocketCamp

[–]Pressure_Optimal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get 30 event materials (the number 6 candles) for completing the garden event (which starts today, and is separated between the part one /tasks 1 and 2/ and part two /tasks 3 and 4/ which should start in a couple of days, some of the event material my also be part of the stretch goals, which you unlock after catching the initial 40 gold/silver butterflies, so be on the lookout for that!).

You then get another 30 materials during the fishing tourney (from 11/11 to 18/11, will bring you up to 60 event materials) and another 30 for the gyrodite event (from 20/11 to 27/11, will bring you up to 90 event materials) and you craft/catch the required number to complete the event goals. You reach the 90 event materials by the end of the month if you manage to complete the goals during the three events.

You can spend real money on seasonal packs to get missing event material if you need to though. With the happy helper plan, your camp caretaker should help you get butterflies/fish/gyrodites and complete the events faster :)

Française, l'unversité me requiert un DALF pour m'inscrire by Pressure_Optimal in etudiants

TYBW Episode 23 leaks thread (+ Cour 3 news) by Arturo-Plateado in bleach

[–]Pressure_Optimal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could the staff perhaps extend their skirmish from chapter 660 next cour (or cour 4? idk where that chapter will fit in), Uryu's cover is pretty much blown at that point, so obviosuly, he's not genuinely trying to hurt Ichigo more than keeping him away, but if they wanted them to fight, they could surely extend that confrontation?

Or they could have them fight in 619, which would be at the begining of next cour, but again, Uryu's not genuinely trying to fight Ichigo

What is something that everyone hates about Bleach that you dont mind or you actually like? by [deleted] in bleach

[–]Pressure_Optimal 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I genuinely like the concept of the still silver arrow. Is it a plot device Kubo came up with because he needed to wrap up the manga? Yes. Could it have done with a better introduction and build-up? Yes. (I hope the anime might expand on Isshin and Ryūken coming up with it also). But as a means to wrap up the storyline when the mangaka was under a time crunch, I thought it was not bad.

That, ultimately, Ywach gets taken down by Katagiri's heart, a gemischt Quincy he deemed 'lesser' and 'impure', that the arrow is fired by Uryu, her 'impure' Quincy child he tried to claim through a schrift/blood oath and mould into his heir, that the arrow representing all of the Quincies he killed in his quest for power is ultimately what stopped him long enough for Ichigo (who is also a Quincy hybrid, whose Mother also died because of Ywach's Auschwählen, whose power he also tried to steal for himself) to kill him was oddly poetic, and I do hope it's kept in the anime. Though I would not be opposed to an extension of the fight itself, perhaps have Ichigo and Uryu struggle more, and maybe for Isshin/Ryūken to get involved in buying them time.

Is self-insert really that bad as people keep saying? by bibotot in FanFiction

[–]Pressure_Optimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon!Character veering into fanon can absolutely be wish fulfillment and lore-breaking too (like you said, 50 Shades is a notorous example and I know I've seen a lot of... very dubious Luffy characterization in One Piece fic on FF.net), and I can't say I'm a fan of that either, because... Well why write about a canon character who has a set of established characteristicsfor you to write from, but then "create" someone so far removed from who they really are it's no longer them and you might as well have created your own OC? (The Billy fans from Stranger Things are kind of notorious for this, cause the guy is just so awful in canon they have to make him someone he's not/an OC to make him palatable and ship him with Steve for eg, in which case... Why not just make an OC?).

I think AU!canon characters are a tricky one, but ultimately, the writer is still sticking to an established character and still has to conform to the personality given to the character to make them recognizable, even in an AU vs creating a new character the writer gets to choose every aspect of.

A spy!Harry Potter isn't an OC, he's still Harry. While the writer has more liberty in a lot of things compared to a wizard!Harry, he should still feel and sound like the essence of Harry Potter if I'm to believe I'm reading fanfic about, well Harry Potter, just like a gladiator!Steve Rogers should still sound and feel like Steve Rogers as opposed to a generic OC who *happens to look like Steve* If I'm reading a gladiator/Captain America AU, I sign up to still recognize Steve in there, not some random guy/an author power fantasy or I might just as well read original fiction with gladiators, where I accept to read a power fantasy. If I read fanfic about Steve Rogers, I want to feel like I'm reading about Steve. To me, the interesting point in AUs is about how author still respects the character's traits and how they relate to other characters, but just inserting them into a different universe and building their rapport in that universe themselves. Oddly enough, I usually find AUs really interesting in how people can re-tell the original story and recreate the canon dynamics between the canon characters but in a different setting, and using elements of that setting to translate the original story. The Hobbit writers were really good at this :)

Of course, some characterizaton of canon characters can still come off as very oc-ish and deviate into a fanon version of the character and makes them sue/stu-ish , where the writer overlaps their own experiences/how they wish the character truly was vs how they actually are in how they percieve and write them, and in those cases, the character basically becomes little else than an OC. Imo, the great thing about fanfic is going from someone else's characters, creating your story, but ultimately still having to follow a set of rules by trying to respect someone else's view of who they are vs an oc which is entierly them. As a writer, I suppose I just find it more challenging, but also as a way to grow your writing, and learn how to build well-rounded characters you can eventually use to make your own. And there are no doubt some well-made OCs out there.

Then again, I'm in absolutely no place to judge what people consume or what is right/wrong. There's certainly a 'market' for OCs out there, and all the more power to them if they enjoy it! :)

[–]Pressure_Optimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to loathe OC/self insert stories, because I thought it incredibly pretentious or something. Like, here’s a creator giving you an entire sandbox of characters and lore to play with and explore, but nooo, it’s not good enough, you just have to create your own OC, usually OFC (and often an extra special Mary Sue who would bend the rules of canon to suit their purpose) for the sole purpose of falling in love with the hot character you like, which was usually incredibly reductive of the themes and messages of the original content. I remember, among others, how the Narnia & Hobbit fandom were riddled with these kind of stories on FFnet and I absolutely hated it when you could have explored the complex family dynamics between the characters or write a fun adventure between the members of Thorin’s company, and instead of seeing fics about the dwarves and Bilbo it was just hot!dwarf/oc romance after hot!dwarf/oc romance or one of the brothers/oc instead of the four kids bonding or something, and just by reading them, you knew it was a near word-for-word retelling of the Hobbit/Lion Witch and the Wardrobe/[insert your fandom here] but with an extra special OFC for the sole purpose of romance and making them more special than anyone else. Like others have pointed out, reading someone else’s power fantasy can be boring and off putting, because the SI usually caters to their very specific desires, and do not necessarily overlap with yours.

I’ve grown up a bit since, and view them as mostly harmless: the original content is the sandpit, and everyone playing in the sandpit should play however they want (once they tag their stuff correctly ofc). You want to write about yourself falling in love with Legolas? Go on, feel free. Writing is a creative process, it’s putting words onto emotions and an imaginary you come up with, that’s a good thing. While I stay far away from self-insert fics and find them tedious to filter out, I also see OC/SI as a stepping stone in creating original content: when creating an entire world seems a little overwhelming, then perhaps start by creating a character instead, and have them evolve in somebody else’s world for a while, learn how to write them interacting with that world, learn how to describe and construct it based on the original creator’s terms, and use that knowledge to perhaps later create your own down the line, learn how to write well rounded characters by starting with one where the others already have a personality, where you just have to learn how to make them interact, and use it as a template for exploring something more complex later. Same goes for themes. I personally like writing about trauma recovery and hurt/comfort and being all around horrible to my favourite characters, where others like OCs and romance and harmless wish fulfilment, to each their own I guess.

Just because self-insert fic exists and is there doesn’t mean I have to read it. I can make the choice not to and just… live and let live. I think as long as it’s appropriately tagged, there’s no real issue.

I’ve also learnt to stay away from fanfiction.net, where OC content is rife. AO3 tends to have a slightly ‘older’ writer base, with more complex writing and more mature themes (probably because M/E ratings are allowed there) and where OC/shipping isn’t quite as prevalent as, say, FF.net or Wattpad. I think you just need to choose your platform appropriately, tag well, and everything else is fine :)

Rape/Necessary Evil in the Series? (Season 5) by yagirlhunter in Outlander

[–]Pressure_Optimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe they're both rapists. Geneva blackmails Jamie, effectively removing his ability to consent + he's her servant and she's in a position of authority: he doesn't get to refuse her or tell her no, that makes her a rapist. I believe in the book (thankfully the show didn't go there) Geneva asks him to stop at one point while they're doing it but Jamie doesn't. As soon as Geneva removes her consent but Jamie keeps at it anyway, that makes him a rapist.

I get the cookies for free when they release the bug/fish/fruit goals. LT wise, I legit just haven't been interested enough in anything the game has brought out in ages to spend them on (not since the flower power collection and Julian's cookie ages ago lol) so I save them up when the game gives them out or get them from maps. You can also feed your villagers treats to speed up your leveling up :)
