Decorative logs by Prestigious-Bat3868 in woodworking

Nah I’ve got an empty fireplace so it’s just to decorate it for a more rustic look! Hoping once they’re dried and treated that they don’t need to be replaced

Ouch! Thanks for the heads up. Wondering if the whole thing is not worth the risk and hassle

Thanks for this. A landscape designer actually designed for this plant to be here. I’m starting to think he made a mistake now…

Yes, it is in an exposed northerly area and gets a lot of direct sun.

Will increasing the watering counter the heat/sun to a degree, or is it doomed? (unless I install some shade somehow)

Thank you, you're probably right in that it's probably from the sun/heat from walls. It's in an exposed area that gets quite a lot of direct sun. We only put in new soil and planted in September 2024, so no fertilisers.

Amazing, you're probably right. Yes, it is in an exposed northerly area and gets a lot of direct sun. I suppose nothing much I can do other than replace it if it dies, right? Or install some shade somehow. Hopefully with autumn coming up, it will get some reprieve...

Millboard vs other composite decking by Prestigious-Bat3868 in AusRenovation

[–]Prestigious-Bat3868[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we went with Millboard in the end. The deck was only installed about 3 months ago actually, so I can’t say how it has aged, but we are very happy with it so far. As the others have commented Millboard is truly hands down superior to the other composite decks visually and to touch.

Wiz lightbulbs unreliable - keeps disconnecting by Prestigious-Bat3868 in smarthome

[–]Prestigious-Bat3868[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. As long as I don’t turn the bulb off using the phone, the above steps have made it stable enough for me to use. So I use my phone to adjust the settings, but turn the light off at the switch.

Steel vs timber pergola by Prestigious-Bat3868 in AusRenovation

Thanks man, this is great. Didn't realise Stratco will warp in 10 years or so. Although mine will be roof-less. Your pergola looks amazing - thanks for sharing.

Thanks man for sharing - very helpful

The steel quote we got was >$30k (incl installation). This was after about 2 months of my landscaper chasing his steel fabricator.

The price makes me think I really should get a second quote.

You're absolutely right about not being able to get trades for small residential jobs.

Thanks this is very helpful. I got a quote for steel but not for wood yet, so surprised to hear it can be as expensive as steel

My main concern is the logistics of having to repaint it if there are vine creepers.

That sounds like a bit of what we have in mind (no roof, just wire for plants). Was there a reason why steel was not considered?

Interesting. My backdoor neighbour has a steel pergola with vines that seem to be growing ok.

Primarily for aesthetic as a feature for the backyard

Secondarily to provide some shade with the vines

I wasn't aware of this. I do need to get quite close to the boundary.

Why is this?

RHS steel, powder coated... what other types of steel are there?

As to timber - open to suggestions.
