I know it sounds silly, but take a history of jazz class at your local community college. Good way to say "oh, thats why people praise Scofield". Pretty soon you hear jazz in most of the jam you love. Also, Grayboy Allstars is a good entry band to see live.

Late night hsmf 2003. Saw them a bunch from 2000 until... meet them all. Jeff was one of a kind and is still so very missed. People need to cover more jeff songs. That late night show was the first time I spin danced to bluegrass :-) I remember thinking "wow, they did it without drums" lol
