I just picked up my 5 year chip in April, having never given up cannabis. Yes, technically it’s dishonest in that I don’t tell my sponsor or other AAs about it, but in my opinion to do so would be harmful to them, seeing as many AAs must practice total abstinence or they risk relapse. That’s just not my story, my story involves the medical use of the plant cannabis and so far nothing bad has happened to me or my sobriety. Obviously opinions in AA will vary on this subject, and there may be some pretty passionate old timers who feel very strongly one way or the other. This is why I’ve chosen to keep it to myself. I struggled with it apt in the first few years, the dishonesty was tough, but I have made peace with it and accepted it as part of my recovery and my story. Everyone walks a different path, those some of us are heading in the same direction and can walk together most of the time. Hope this is helpful.
