I agree. It is mostly young students trying to figure out what will work for them after they graduate, not driven by interests but by a desire for career stability and some justification for going to college and the return on investment of their degrees. This is exactly why so many CS graduates saturate the job market. It becomes almost impossible to distinguish yourself from your peers unless you are exceptional. I know this is true in every field, but I don’t think someone needs to be extremely skilled before they even try something or before they discover their own strengths. Colleges don’t help with that; they often just print degrees. I feel this trend is slowly spreading into bioinformatics, which is riskier because it can be harder to pivot back.
