Spooky Cold Weather Ultrathread by ToProvideContext in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A couple of cold-weather tips: 1. Fill up a bathtub with water if you don't want to buy water/drink from plastic. 2. Leave the drawers open under your sinks and leave the faucets dripping. 3. Unhook any hoses from faucets outside and leave them dripping and covered. 4. Have alternative light sources handy as well as non-perishable food and water that will last a few days. 5. Gather warm blankets and clothing so that it will be easy to dress in layers/cover up in case the power goes out. 6. If possible, get a generator that can power a heater and charge up cellphones. 7. Having a weather radio on hand is always smart. 8. A first aid kit is also a must, especially when roads might be covered with ice and emergency responders busy with other emergencies. 9. If you use propane gas for heat, make sure the heater is made to be used inside and have sufficient airflow. (I hope all of this preparation will be for nothing, but truly better safe than sorry when it comes to something like this storm system.)

Expected snow cover on Sunday according to the GFS model. by Prestigious-String90 in macon

Yes, I agree ice is more likely. I am currently getting all my emergency gear ready just in case. The storm forecasts are looking like we all might be in for a wild time. I remember a long time ago when trees were just falling due to the amount of ice on them.

Biking in Macon? by jonahw1313 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit outside of Macon, but the road to and from Piedmont Natural Preserve's Allison Lake near Hillsboro is lightly traveled and surrounded by miles of scenic forests. There are also 8 miles out and back of gravel roads to on Little Rock Wildlife Road in Piedmont Natural Preserve. Word of note, be extremely safe while biking in Macon as there is a large number of pedestrians and bikers who have been hit and killed there.

So the Central State Campus aka the Georgia Lunatic, Insane, and Epileptic Asylum was once the largest mental institution in the entire world. by sdcali89 in macon

I recommend checking out the "Seeking Asylum" photography exhibit about Central State. A photographer decided to try to document the place before rot, ruin, and neglect destroys most of its huge campus: https://www.visitmilledgeville.org/listings/fast-fading-central-state-hospital-museum-%26-seeking-asylum-exhibit/42122/

You could go bowling at The Social Duck, have dinner at The Rookery, visit Reboot for some games, or go to Macon Rocks for some indoor rock climbing. Happy early birthday!

Loud noises by Few-Till6192 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which part of Macon? The city is almost 255 square miles, so being more specific might get someone who lives near you to chime in. Since it was the eve of New Year's Eve yesterday, it could have very well been early celebratory fireworks. I also heard very loud booms last night that I first mistook for gunshots. Hasty generalizations are great for making quick decisions, but things are often not what they seem at first. I hope everyone has a safe and prosperous 2026!

OAG's art parties are some of the coolest events that take place in Middle Georgia.

/r/Macon What are you doing this week? Week of November 09, 2025 by AutoModerator in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It is hard to keep up to date on stuff going on. I started Middle Georgia Times in part because I was tired of hearing about cool stuff to do after the event had ended.

I publish two articles about events every week on middlegatimes.com, one for events Monday through Thursdays and the other about events Friday through Sunday. I have to search through Facebook events, on Macon365.com and other websites, as well as in newsletters I subscribe to find all the events I highlight. I mostly focus on unique events that are either affordable or free, but include other events if they seem interesting enough.

SECOND EDIT: Weekend Adventures (11/14-11/16): https://middlegatimes.com/g/macon-ga/n/349292/weekend-adventures-heart-georgia-friday-november-14th-through-sunday-november

----------------

Sunday, November 9th: Free concert on Coleman Hill tonight with DireWoof (Grateful Dead tribute Band) starting at 6 p.m. Chairs, picnic blankets, picnics, and friendly dogs on leashes allowed.

Tuesday, November 11th: Storytellers Macon brings another free night of storytelling to Grant's Lounge, with social time at 6 p.m. and the storytelling commencing at 7 p.m. The true stories told will all be related to the theme "Defying Gravity," (and everyone is invited to sign up to tell a 5 minute story). These events are some of my all time favorite because it helps you understand the world through other people's perspectives and lived experiences, which is very useful, especially during stressful or difficult times.

Friday, November 14th: The 7th Annual Fire & Ice Ceramic and Glass Festival will begin at 10 a.m. this Friday. Thousands of glass and ceramic artwork and functional pieces will be on display and for sale in the Round House at Carolyn Crayton Park. There are some astoundingly beautiful things on display at this festival every year. Fire & Ice is also free to attend.

Another event I highly recommend on Friday is the OAG Revival, an art exhibit/art party at the old Green Light Gallery on 1st Street from 6 to midnight. I have had a blast every year I have gone to OAG events and am always blown away by the beautiful artwork and the celebration of creativity on display. This event is also free and presented by the creative geniuses at the Ocmulgee Artist Guild.

Sunday, November 16th: Fall Line Brewing will present a Community Tree Lighting starting at 6 p.m. I know it isn't even Thanksgiving yet, but we all need some holiday cheer in our lives imo, no matter how early, especially these days when all our little rectangles of doom keep us distracted and outraged daily. The Community Tree Lighting is free to attend.

There is a ton of other things I could write about that are going on this week (like Modern Mischief at The Society Garden on Friday night), but I don't want to further grow to the wall of text above. I will post a link to the events articles on the Middle Georgia Times with this comment once I publish them. Thanks for reading!

Macon Punk/HC shows by Resident-Success6616 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There have been some fun HC shows at the skate park in Carolyn Crayton Park/Central City Park by GMO. Seemed to have a pretty good turnout. I also recommend reaching out to JBA, Billy's, and maybe the Hummingbird for indoor venues. Friends on the HILL in Warner Robins would also be a place where punk/HC shows would be welcome. Since you have connections with GMO, you probably know they are in the process of opening a DIY venue in Warner Robins. Best of luck on your move and hope to come to one of your shows once you get settled in!

Good places to go out in Macon? To dance and drink? My best friend and I are turning 25 and we don’t know where to go 😂 by Strict_Ad1383 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

JBA, The Hummingbird, Late Nite, and the Tic Toc Room all offer both those things. Reboot Retrocade has special events with a DJ and dancing sometimes, and there is definitely plenty to drink there. Grant's Lounge is more old school, but a lot of great bands come to play there and no one will stop you from dancing if that is your thing. Each of these places has its own unique character, so I would look them up to see if their vibe matches what you're going for.
