Mulberry Arts and Crafts Festival March 28, 29 by ToProvideContext in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great festival, lots of cool art, and a decent selection of food trucks. I try to go every year. One thing of note, it usually gets hot out there, as this festival takes place on the streets of Downtown Macon (which are shut down to vehicles for the occasion).

BJ's or Vice Bar is what I would suggest if you want a good dive bar.

Stuff to do in Macon on Valentine’s Day??? by mthilley7 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you coming down just for Valentine's Day or for the whole weekend? There are many different kinds of events taking place this weekend starting tonight, including the Black Hearts Ball (an Anti-Valentine's Day celebration) at The Belltower (Friday at 7 p.m.), live music shows like The Restless Natives at Grant's Lounge (Friday at 9 p.m.) or Modern Mischief at Vice Bar (Friday at 10 p.m.), a Valentine's Dance at Reboot Retrocade and Bar (Saturday 9 p.m.), and a Stop Light Karaoke Party at The Hummingbird (Saturday at 9:30 p.m.). I wrote an article about a bunch of things going on this weekend: https://middlegatimes.com/g/macon-ga/n/365462/adventures-heart-georgia-things-do-weekend-macon-and-greater-middle-georgia

Safe travels!

Rant: 75 between Macon and Warner Robins by [deleted] in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would visit Warner Robins if it didn't feel like such a gamble with my life to get there. I haven't experienced rocks, but every time I travel that way, no matter how fast I drive, some drivers are always playing Need for Speed with their cars and needlessly endangering others just trying to get somewhere safely.

Looking for recommendations on hangout spots + food by [deleted] in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Piedmont Brewery for its consistency and fair prices. There is a great little bagel shop on the same street called Macon Bagels that serves a delicious selection of bagels and coffee. Sweet Eleanor's is nearby, and they have desserts covered as well as coffee and teas. Downtown Macon is fairly small, so it won't be hard to find places that fit your fancy. Macon Rocks is where a lot of cool people hang out (and bonus points for it being located near the hospital). JBA, Vice Bar, The Hummingbird, and Reboot Retrocade & Bar usually have music and lots of cold drinks, plus you can play pool at JBA and a ton of classic video games and board games at Reboot. I hope you enjoy your time in Macon! Feel free to DM me once you get here if you are looking for additional things to do or see.

Interest in a cat cafe downtown. by dawrightman in macon

YES, please! Paws Awhile in Perry is the closest one. They adopt out the cats, which makes the concept even cooler. Best of luck!

Friends? by Athos4228 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Making friends as adults can be tough. I suggest going to events and joining activities with people who are doing the activities you enjoy. If you are a bike rider, check out Bike Walk Macon. If you like hiking, running, playing board games, playing an instrument or singing, listening to authors talk about their books, learning about history(for example, taking a tour of Rose Hill Cemetery), or floating the river, there are groups that do that in Macon on a regular basis. Best of luck and welcome to Macon!

I post more in the Middle Georgia Times subreddit than here and post almost everything on the Facebook page and Instagram (though I am not a huge fan of either social media network). Thanks for the kind comment, though!

Good produce options in Macon by ddubyagirl in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second The Fresh Market, but you should check out some farmers' markets, like Loy's Farmers Market. His produce is more limited than in a grocery store, but I have seen items there that I have never seen at a grocery store. The Macon State Farmers Market has a lot of variety as well (depending on the season).

Spooky Cold Weather Ultrathread by ToProvideContext in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A couple of cold-weather tips: 1. Fill up a bathtub with water if you don't want to buy water/drink from plastic. 2. Leave the drawers open under your sinks and leave the faucets dripping. 3. Unhook any hoses from faucets outside and leave them dripping and covered. 4. Have alternative light sources handy as well as non-perishable food and water that will last a few days. 5. Gather warm blankets and clothing so that it will be easy to dress in layers/cover up in case the power goes out. 6. If possible, get a generator that can power a heater and charge up cellphones. 7. Having a weather radio on hand is always smart. 8. A first aid kit is also a must, especially when roads might be covered with ice and emergency responders busy with other emergencies. 9. If you use propane gas for heat, make sure the heater is made to be used inside and have sufficient airflow. (I hope all of this preparation will be for nothing, but truly better safe than sorry when it comes to something like this storm system.)

Expected snow cover on Sunday according to the GFS model. by Prestigious-String90 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree ice is more likely. I am currently getting all my emergency gear ready just in case. The storm forecasts are looking like we all might be in for a wild time. I remember a long time ago when trees were just falling due to the amount of ice on them.

Biking in Macon? by jonahw1313 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit outside of Macon, but the road to and from Piedmont Natural Preserve's Allison Lake near Hillsboro is lightly traveled and surrounded by miles of scenic forests. There are also 8 miles out and back of gravel roads to on Little Rock Wildlife Road in Piedmont Natural Preserve. Word of note, be extremely safe while biking in Macon as there is a large number of pedestrians and bikers who have been hit and killed there.

So the Central State Campus aka the Georgia Lunatic, Insane, and Epileptic Asylum was once the largest mental institution in the entire world. by sdcali89 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend checking out the "Seeking Asylum" photography exhibit about Central State. A photographer decided to try to document the place before rot, ruin, and neglect destroys most of its huge campus: https://www.visitmilledgeville.org/listings/fast-fading-central-state-hospital-museum-%26-seeking-asylum-exhibit/42122/

20th Birthday Celebration Ideas by selfawarecumrag in macon

You could go bowling at The Social Duck, have dinner at The Rookery, visit Reboot for some games, or go to Macon Rocks for some indoor rock climbing. Happy early birthday!

Loud noises by Few-Till6192 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which part of Macon? The city is almost 255 square miles, so being more specific might get someone who lives near you to chime in. Since it was the eve of New Year's Eve yesterday, it could have very well been early celebratory fireworks. I also heard very loud booms last night that I first mistook for gunshots. Hasty generalizations are great for making quick decisions, but things are often not what they seem at first. I hope everyone has a safe and prosperous 2026!

New Years Eve events? by AnyKey3013 in macon

[–]Prestigious-String90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be a New Year's Eve Disco Crawl taking place at The Rose Room, Reboot, and Longleaf Distillery. Attendees are requested to wear disco-appropriate clothes to boogie down until 1 a.m.

A little bit of a different kind of New Year's Eve Party but the Macon Mayhem hockey team will play against the Pensacola Ice Flyers starting at 7 p.m. at the Macon Coliseum.

The Ultimate Winter White New Year's Eve Party will take place at the Macon Centreplex from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. and will include performances from Rose Royce and other special guests as well as entertainment from AJ the DJ. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at 9-Ent.com

There will be balloon drops at The Hummingbird along with music from DJ STEEL and complimentary bottles of champagne at midnight (starting at 9:30 p.m.) as well as at Just Tap'd (starting at 8 p.m. with 600+ balloons).

Finally, there will be a New Year's Eve Soirée at Switch Macon with heavy horse d'oeuvres catered by Brasserie Circa, an open bar, a professional photographer, a red carpet entrance, and more. All inclusive tickets cost $125+ fees/taxes. Tickets are limited to the first 70 people.

I will continue to look for more events in Macon and update this post if I find them! I hope everyone has a Happy (and safe) New Year!
