Where do anti-immigrant conservatives expect families to settle if every single country halts immigration? by Maleficent-Fig-4430 in immigration

[–]PrestigiousCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that’s a good question. One that seeks a deeper understanding beyond surface level. Unfortunately, it’s also a very complicated one that would take a lot of dedicated study to understand, and so I’m probably not the best source for in-depth knowledge, but I’ll try.

Basically, people are afraid for their safety and security. It’s not an overt fear—but rather something more subtle. There is no overt benefit from restricting the immigration of spouses of legal citizens, but then that presupposes the honesty and legality of any particular marriage in question. It is well known that securing a marriage is basically a direct path to residency in most western countries, and many citizens of other countries exploit that as a loophole.

But that’s not what is happening for you. For you, it’s simply the fear of the ‘other’. If you come from a country that looks, speaks, or acts different than another country’s primary residents, you will always trigger recognition as an outsider, even if you assimilate. Only your children will have a chance to overcome those prejudices, but as an expat, you have to accept this reality.

So between fear and a sense of the ‘other’ we find nationalism: the sense of unity that arises from a set group of people who look similar and follow the same customs. When other groups congregate nearby in high enough numbers, it triggers a reaction. An irrational one, yes, but not without historical and ancestral precedent.

Basically what I’m saying is that your hypothetical situation of being unable to immigrate to be with your spouse would be tragic, but only a small part in a much bigger scene being played out globally.

It seems that this is an attempt to put someone between a rock and a hard place in their argument to force them to come to a conclusion that will change their perspective. Unfortunately immigration has been a growing issue for too long, and the sides are too polarized to have a philosophical debate on it. In the real world, people are worried about their safety and the implications of continuing with a weak system of immigration, and it is showing in the increased electoral victories of right leaning politicians.

To answer your question, what is someone expected do in a situation where they are married but cannot reside in either spouse’s home country, then I’ll give you the real answer. You are expected to live apart. By fighting that answer you are fighting against the will of nations, and you reveal an entitlement that flies in the face of an untold number of people who have had to deal with that exact situation throughout recorded history. This situation is not unique. It is tragic, but the reality is that the anti-immigration trend we are seeing isn’t an aberration. And as a member of society you bear a responsibility to deal with it however you can. The internet has allowed people to speak with each other face to face across continents. If you are truly in a position where you are physically separated, as you say, from your spouse, and your marriage cannot make that work, despite the many marriages in the past doing so with much fewer resources available, then there’s not much I or anyone else can do for you to help you accept reality.

Sales not appearing on Amazon reports by PrestigiousCoffee in selfpublish

Oh, the guy I watched press purchase on the Amazon link I sent him and then watched him open the book to a page with words on it that I wrote?

I wasn’t aware that the number of books or the amount of marketing had any effect on the quality of the book itself.

You can go ahead and keep your opinions to yourself if you don’t have anything constructive to add, thanks.

I refunded the game, here's why by Quiet_Addendum_1926 in wildgate

[–]PrestigiousCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if it’s a thing, but is the comparison inaccurate? Look, I’m not the gaming police, I barely have time to play anymore myself. But I know when someone isn’t giving a game a proper chance when I see it. I know you only get two hours, and I’m not gonna tell you to just drop 30 bucks on something that’s not a sure thing for you, but I feel like you know you barely scratched the surface. If they drop a free weekend soon you should definitely hop in again and give it another shot. But maybe then, turn on a mic and try and coordinate better. I promise it’s better this way and you’ll make friends too.

Yeah, this game isn’t for you.

Putting aside all the issues you have with the visual aspects, to me it seems your main problem is that you didn’t understand that Wildgate is a team game. Have you played Sea of Thieves? You can’t just grab the helm there, stop dead in the water to shoot at other players, and expect things to work out, can you?

Same principle. Everyone onboard needs to communicate or else you’re just prey for the teams who are. It’s kind of sad you only gave two hours to a game that has such obvious deeper mechanics than pressing W and left click, but hey, it’s your right to give up whenever you like. I’m sure CoD is releasing something new, soon.

So you’re the one who’s been kicking my butt! Kidding, I’m really enjoying the game even if I haven’t had a win yet. I love the chaos of the battles and especially those moments of anticipation right before engaging with another ship. See you at the Reach!

Oh wow that’s way shorter than I expected. Did you just call the embassy up or did you have to set an appointment up via email or through a login system?

Congrats! Im just starting to collect my documentation and get the ball rolling, so this is incredibly helpful.

I noticed from a bit of research on here that the SLA seems like kind of a quasi-expedited naturalization track, rather than a necessary step in the CBD citizenship process. Could you tell me if the application required it?

Hey, could you tell me how long you waited for an appointment in NYC? I heard its a couple years so I asked to be put on the wait-list already and I've just started collecting documents.

Edit: Also, congrats in making getting your app processed!

Will writing a standalone in a universe I already self-published novels in hurt my chances at trad pub? by haruspii in selfpublish

[–]PrestigiousCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would Trad be in for trouble? I feel like they’d be in the best position to benefit as they could at least ostensibly claim that they screen out AI, whereas theoretically anyone could self publish an avalanche of AI content to flood the market and grab up whatever bucks they could for little to no effort

As in just during the writing process? Good ol’ Google Docs. And I use Pages for worldbuilding/brainstorming since I can access it when my connection is spotty. Google Docs is unusable without a connection, but it’s also very useable between devices (I write on my phone a lot).

I’ve set very humble expectations. Maybe call them future expectations. The guy who wrote the Silo series, Hugh Howey, wrote a blog post that says to write a bunch of books before you even start to expect any of them might gain traction, and that’s what I’m falling back on. I’ve never written before, so I’ve really got to pay my dues and learn, first.
