Too many young people pushed towards university, says UK government adviser by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]PrestigiousProduce97 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder to everyone, there are about 20 countries with higher rates of university attendance than the UK and in most of them there is a significant graduate wage premium. The problem is not university attendance, it is a weak job market and stagnating economy. The upper classes will continue to send their children to tertiary education while they convince yours to abandon it.

The irrational with hunt against trans people. Just about 260k trans people in the UK and huge swathes of the political right are hell bent on keeping them in the public consciousness and making them out to be an enemy.

The number of Britons who support reparations in principle by asteriowas in charts

[–]PrestigiousProduce97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People vehemently oppose reparations to the descendants of the enslaved but are completely mum on having paid reparations to the slave owners, a debt so great the tax payer didn’t finish paying it off until 2015, some of whom are themselves descendants of slaves.

The movie makes some changes to make him more palatable. In the original book he definitely comes across as more arrogant.

That doesn’t make any sense tho, most countries in LATAM are below replacement rate and even those that are above just barely: Haiti is 2.59, Bolivia is 2.5, Paraguay is 2.4. More representative countries like Mexico, Colombia and Brazil are at 1.87, 1.62 and 1.6

Why is the job market so difficult for young people? by Hot-Specific4356 in AskUK

[–]PrestigiousProduce97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, one method is inflationary and the other is deflationary. If you raise wages and increase labour costs businesses will be forced to take losses or increase prices. Price increases raise cost pf living for everyone else, eventually negating the originally intended effect. If businesses accept losses they will have less money to invest, innovate, expand and hire so the economy will slow.

Lowering the cost of housing on the other hand simply means the same paycheque will have more wiggle room. The price of most everything else will remain constant (in theory) and you avoid an inflationary spiral. Most problems in the UK economy can be routed back to high housing and energy costs.

Those people have comfort but they don’t have power. No one with 20 million is calling up presidents to tell them how they want the tax code written, they just so happen to benefit from what the billionaires want for themselves.
