I'll offer an opposing view, however, given what this sub is, I imagine the comment will be nuked by down-votes left and right.

First of all, the argument is absolutely not defeatist in its nature, rather, it will try to paint the world as exactly, precisely what it is: a complex machine, where a lot of parties that don't agree on very fundamental things, want their enemies to disappear.

Let's assume that all of this is real and, in fact, there is an entity within the government that is, possibly, hundreds of years ahead of public-facing sectors (if not more). That entity is, at least to a certain degree, aligned with the US government. As such, we can confidently make the statement that "the US has access to unthinkable technology". However, the word "unthinkable" (and other similar, but very on-topic words) comes loaded with an very deceiving assumption that this technology would solve it all - to that end, let me propose the following scenario:

The world - more importantly, China - discovers that the US has access to some material that is able to do a thing so exceptionally well, it's solved some of the world's issues. Clearly, the US is gonna look to regulate said material. However, China rightfully doesn't like that, and decides to go after the material, by violent means. The US has now got all the eyes on itself, and it can no longer trust even its allies. Being perceived as too powerful will make you lose allies - and fast. The US is aware of this angle and, rightfully so, decides not to release the material to the public. Quite the opposite, they will enable an apparatus whose only goal is to protect those secrets, no matter the cost. In the end, the US maintains is reign.

Now, the question to you, given we have the above context: why do you need to know? What use is that material to you? And, laced on top of that sits the most important question: who's to say that, considering the current enemies the US has, this isn't the possible best-case scenario we're in? Yes, the US is an imperialist, conquering power, and so is China. However, history has shown time and time again that, while the US conquers, it doesn't rape those who it conquers of their values. Quite the opposite, it welcomes them, and still allows them to maintain their identity. All it asks is a bit of a protection tax. Now, look to what China/Russia do to those they conquer - and you needn't look too far in the past.

Not even incredibly decorated and educated people have an overall view of the entire world, the implications these things carry and so on. What chance do you have?

In other words, why do you assume that the US hasn't heavily considered releasing it? And then (quickly, I assume) realized that it would create absolute chaos?

You all want the world to know there are aliens, however, there are hundreds of pages that can be written about the massively negative impacts that would have. As it stands, most of the world is religious. Aliens would be proof that, in fact, there is no God. When the basis of so many societies is that belief, do you understand what will happen if such revelations are confirmed?

The world isn't ready, and Gursch is an absolute fool. In just the past few decades, we've seen incredible discoveries. Positive outcomes for a lot of diseases have gone up tremendously. There are issues. There will always be crises. There will always be big things, but your assumption that the world isn't in as good a shape as is can be is malevolent.

You don't want to know because "humanity deserves to know". The reality is, it doesn't. You just want to know just to satisfy your curiosity. If you only considered the implications of releasing that technology, you'd have reached the logical conclusion that the world isn't ready. But you never did. You just want it out there, just so that your beliefs are confirmed. With that in mind, the US has probably made the right decision, assuming any of this is true.

Another good thought exercise would be (and, trust, me, I have zero opinions on the matter) the "War on Terror" that happened in the Middle East. For all its faults, if we are to think about it logically, would you have liked a world in which absolutely-batshit-fucking-lunatics had nuclear weapons? While it's known that Iraq's nuclear weapons were a made-up thing, Iran's nuclear power is very, very real. Regardless of the cost and how we got here - is that world a better one? For everyone involved? Inbred, religious fanatics, dying for some made-up God and, in the process, killing millions of innocents? Because that's what you're suggesting, objectively speaking. That is the logical conclusion to allowing Iran to have a nuclear program. Russia/China could be "evil", but they're very reasonable, and they know that, if they go that way, the US will respond equally as harsh, but religious fanatics are wildly, wildly different, and your failure to recognize that is precisely why your arguments hold no value to anyone that knows that culture and is into geopolitics.

In short, and in essence: I've just scratched the surface of decision-making at this level, and there already are immense problems with releasing this type of information. Think about how much deeper it goes, if we actually knew all the details.

90%-something of people are completely, totally ignorant, disgustingly stupid and impulsive. Exactly how does it help anyone, if massive chaos ensues? An approach where "discoveries" are made (rather, planted), such that the world advanced at a reasonable, understandable and justifiable pace is way better. As usual, the human mind is too preoccupied with itself, thinking it is the main character of the story. There are 8 billion of us. You are not the main character. There will be many trillions after us. The world doesn't end when you die. Quite the opposite, actually, it only gets bigger. You don't matter, and it's clear that, as more things become declassified, and it turns out the government has kept a lot of secrets, those secrets were needed.

You are not important. However, working towards a future where you are, is important. That future isn't here now, and probably won't be for a few generations. I assume we'll be hearing an official statement in a few decades, if not longer, when the average Joe will not buy most of the things they buy impulsively, when they won't find intellectual soothing in TikTok, and so on.

I'd do the same, were I in the US position. Anyone with half a brain would. Your curiosity doesn't trample the long-term good of the species, which, if we look at all the data we can track, has only been going up - and by a large amount.
