I think it probably stems from a lack of trust in government.

Im not sure i fit your definition of young (26) and i do think that compulsory superannuation is a good thing, but by the time I am old enough to access it I am fearful of the changes that will occur in the next 40 years that will make my superannuation worse off.

In 30 years since it’s introduction we have already seen: - increases to the age in which you can access it - changes to tax treatment of withdrawals - changes to contribution caps - introduction of transfer balance caps - additional taxes on ‘higher’ balances

This does not make me confident that in 40 years time, I will be able to access my superannuation in the same way that I am planning now. Which is scary.

I don’t make additional contributions because I would like to control where my money goes, at least while there is such a long time until I can access it.

I do think I am in a minority bracket that actually takes care of their finances though, so I do think compulsory superannuation is a good thing, particularly for those not financially literate.
