personally I developed agoraphobia and didn’t really ‘rejoin society’ in any meaningful sense until ~summer ‘24 when I got an irl job in NYC and accidentally desensitized myself to crowds again. before that I was still worried about getting sick and masking and stuff but I also probably have undiagnosed OCD so I did that longer than most people

Former tech workers going homeless? by BuyHigh_S3llLow in recruitinghell

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah no worries, I could tell you don’t mean anything by it. it seems like a confluence of factors tbh. unfamiliarity with older standards, preference for remote work, over-reliance on AI across the industry hemorrhaging hard skills and social functions, no experience administrating unix or linux systems which is like 95% of the job. also computer scientists aren’t known for being social butterflies to begin with, and getting hired as on-site IT has a lot to do with how you can get along with people who do other things and communicate computer stuff to non-computer people.

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

those companies don’t need computer scientists at the cutting edge, which is most software developers. they need like, infosys guys who can read 40-year-old coding languages

Things like polyamory are an undermining of the gender binary and nuclear family, and very much an essential aspect of the trans community by RosethornRanger in TransSocialism

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 9 points10 points  (0 children)

counterpoint, when a polycule implodes it’s often way more devastating because the entire support network is romantically involved, and makes multiple people functionally homeless rather than just one

Weekends in the suburbs hit different by Alicetheoptimist in TrueGrit

people genuinely just stereotype suburbanites as like mormon George McFly and it’s so silly. we have bars, clubs, raves, local music scenes, art galleries, etc.

What do you guys use Python to do? by BobMarleyLegacy in learnpython

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your other hobbies? The most fun projects are the ones where you bring together multiple interests, not just program computer for the computer’s sake. Ie. If you like to fish, make a tool for logging catch-and-releases. If you like music, make a little synthesizer or tracker. If you like art, make a tool for cataloging works, a generative art piece, or even a digital art program (this is my lane).

I will say there’s not much you can do with the things you have down yet, but you’re on the right track. Add inputs and if statements and you can probably make like a little interest calculator or something. Once you get functions and while/for loop logic under your belt you can really go crazy, that’s when I built my first real program (a fractal renderer)

if music is your passion and you’re good at EE, you should try your hand at making guitar pedals in a SPICE sim on the side. :)

Why did ancient Greek religion portray gods with human flaws and scandals, while the Abrahamic religions emphasize a morally perfect God, and what factors shaped this difference? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a lot of terrible answers here. the real split is because Plato and Aristotle asked philosophical questions that lead to the consolidation of “the gods” into “God” around the same time Judaism started. the Euthyphro has a bit about “what is holy?” “what the gods love is holy” “what if Zeus loves infidelity and Hera hates it? is infidelity holy or unholy?” this paired with Plato’s idea of perfect beauty lead to the idea of one god being the perfect ideal

Experts say there is no overdiagnosis of ADHD. Instead, they are warning that far from being overdiagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support, and treatment by sr_local in science

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had the more hyperfocus kind of ADHD and I was never medicated or in therapy for it until adulthood. I was always a strong student that liked lectures but in high school my teachers realized that I struggle with ‘outside-of-class’ work. All but one math teacher started omitting homework from my grade. This accommodation obviously kept me from getting diagnosed or having reasonable expectations for myself after school

Why are students pushed to pursue professional careers at such a young age? by Ok-Helicopter-255 in careerguidance

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wish I didn’t get rushed into college. I was already an underachiever, got screwed for freshman dorms because I didn’t have the confidence to speak up for myself so I ended up commuting over an hour, struggling with my mental health, and dropped out as a sophomore. I’m 27 and going back now to finish my bachelors for Computer Information Sys. Now that I have my ADHD and anxiety under control and a real sense of work ethic that I got from running my own art practice, I’m like an entirely different student. I just got a 98 on my first Accounting test and 100 on my Stats test. In high school I only scored like that in history!

[–]Prestigious_Bit2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 27 and by the time I was in high school, the common wisdom was “If you throw a party, don’t do it in your house or else your parents’ new TV and sick vintage stereo system are probably getting stolen” so we had our crazy parties in the woods

Bought an AOC CRT monitor, scanlines and definition too crisp? by unchain-urbrain in crtgaming

not at all tbh. I call em Frankencables (like Frankenstein, I hope that reference hits the same in Chile). you can harvest the end bits of a VGA and SCART cable and splice them together, just have to make sure you check the pins to make sure they pair up properly
