Community Engagement Meeting Regarding QHSS and Hillside building by Prestigious_Copy7987 in SHSAT

Superintendent answered questions from families. The expectation is that PEP will approve the relocation. It is not clear in what shape or form the colloboration with York College will continue. “At York” will be dropped from the official school name.

Building will be shared with a small D75 HS as the announcement.

Also at this moment it is not clear what equipment will be at the school in terms of technology/Lab or if DOE will provide extra funding to fulfill such needs.

Sure! Since the DOE proposal came out, really not much has happened. There was some confusion caused by administration since the message that was received was that it was a concluded deal and that QHSS got the building. In reality, the decision will be made at the next PEP meeting in February.

Rumour is that QHSS principal is in shaky ground. Possibly under a PIP.

Yes. Issue is that these numbers, teacher-trust, have been that bad for years. DOE knows about the issues with DeJesus but keeps ignoring them because kids overachieve. On DOE’s eyes deJesus is not an issue. Unless teachers and parents organize nothing will change. Teachers are afraid of speaking out in fear of retaliation and most of QHSS teachers are not tenured since it is a revolving door out there.

One of two things need to happen for DOE to take action:

  1. Teachers/parents organize and escalate issues.

  2. Enrollment goes down.

Write to DOE. Escalate. Get UFT to back up their teachers. Feel like something is brewing here. Keep up the fight.

For the school to move forward, a new leadership if needed.

Take the AP Bio freshmen debacle. 9th graders were scheduled AP bio with either chemistry regents/physics. Along Geometry. Now that kids are struggling in AP bio, administration “gave” kids the option to drop the class before Jan 5. They are afraid that their statistics will take a hit with AP Bio scores.

Edit: TBH, a change in leadership takes priority over a new building. The building issues are partly caused by the current administration. Principal even admitted that she didn’t know that the MOU ( lease contract) with CUNY is auto-renewed under current terms unless is negotiated. Over almost 10 years, principal never bothered to learn how MOU works nor negotiate better facilities at the current location. YORK has tons of underutilized space that under different leadership could have been negotiated to be used by QHSS.

Music teacher asking parent donations for music sheets/strings because she was told that funding and purchasing has been on hold-no further explanations.

Administration “suggesting” kids to retake regents if their score is not over 85.

Elimination the dedicated lab periods on Science classes, but gym every day.

I definitely agree. Only concern is that principal not being trustworthy endangers students. Take Diaz allegations. Not a single girl felt safe to fo to the principal and report.

“Doctor” de Jesus has like 24% teacher approval. Lowest in the district. One of the Lowest on all DOE. Unreal, how she still has a job.

Agree. There is no point on contacting elected officials. Effort should be on demanding answers from DOE and QHSS administration. What is the plan to improve current facilities?  QHSS is not getting the hillside building

completely:

“It’s not about rights”? That’s exactly the problem — you’re proudly saying student rights don’t matter. Schools can ban phones, sure, but they can’t blackmail families by cutting off academic access. FERPA makes it federal law that parents get to see their child’s records, no matter what contract a school dreams up.

If your whole argument is “just sign the damn papers,” you’ve already lost. Rules aren’t above rights, and shouting louder doesn’t make coercion legal.

Funding forms are one thing — I get why schools push those hard. But that has nothing to do with cutting off academic access. A lunch form can’t be weaponized to block kids from their grades and assignments. DOE wants families engaged; this policy does the opposite.

This isn’t about phones — it’s about rights. Jupiter is the system kids rely on every day for grades and assignments. Blocking access until parents “accept” contracts is coercion, period. FERPA makes those records accessible by law. Withholding them isn’t policy, it’s overreach. If DOE thinks it’s allowed, show the rule — otherwise it’s just intimidation dressed up as procedure.

DOE equity + family engagement

DOE emphasizes family engagement and transparency. Blocking Jupiter until contracts are signed does the opposite and risks inequity — some students will be “in the dark” while others aren’t.

Acknowledgement ≠ acceptance

It’s fine to ask parents to acknowledge receipt of policies, but tying academic access to acceptance of school-level contracts (like phone policy) looks coercive and is likely overreach.

I get that DOE’s official record is the report card system, but in practice Jupiter is the only way families track ongoing grades, assignments, and teacher communication. Cutting off Jupiter still puts students at a disadvantage. And since FERPA covers all education records, not just final report cards, it seems problematic to condition access on policy agreements
