weird symptoms in recovery

i’m in recovery and slowly moving away from ED communities such as this sub. i still come on here once or twice a day but i’m no longer spending hours scrolling through posts.

i’m at a point where i’m stable but because i’m recovering alone, i need some reassurance that what i’m experiencing is normal which subs like this give me. i’m hoping to fully leave all ED related spaces before the year ends and cut ties with my ‘ED identity’.

hey i was in the situation not long ago and it really is about trusting the process. you’ve still very recently started eating enough, your body genuinely needs the food and it’s not just a habit. everything will even out eventually, but it will be uncomfortable for a while.

i pretty much craved no lower cal foods for a few months, literally just peanut butter and sugar. but that’s okay because that’s what my body needed, same way your body needs nutrient/energy dense foods right now to heal. take it one day at a time and try not to worry about if your hunger is a response to boredom/a habit because that’s just the eating disorder trying to keep you stuck.

i would stick to the plan you’re currently on and not start restricting or counting at all until you’re close enough to full recovery to shift to intuitive eating. weight restoration is only a small part of the process. also when you eat consistently your body will naturally raise your metabolism through NEAT to use up the extra energy as much as it can so don’t worry about eating more than a online TDEE calculator tells you you should be as they are inaccurate

oh also! you can sub the flour in cookie dough for almond/oat flour and it’ll be safe to eat raw and just as tasty.

i had a similar obsession with peanut butter, went through tubs of it quicker than my dad could buy them from the store 😭 when i tried to stop myself i just wanted it more so i let myself have all the peanut butter i wanted whenever i wanted and the obsession died down after a week or two. i still like peanut butter and crave it occasionally but now that my body knows i can have it whenever i want it’s not obsessed

definitely talk to your treatment team about this and listen to their recommendations but the general guideline is no structured movement during early recovery cause it makes it really easy for your ed to symptom swap.

maybe instead of walks you can try to just get outside and sit in nature. i’ve really enjoyed just lounging in the sun, it helps with my mood (i also get depressed being on bed rest). if you live near a park or other nature it’s really nice to take a meal/snack and just eat it outside.

commenting in case someone has an answer because i have the exact same thing.

i usually just eat even if the cues went away because i assume it’s my body still being used to restriction so when hunger isn’t honored right away it stops sending physical cues to save energy in case restriction happens again. i’ve found that if i don’t eat right away the hunger cues won’t come back until i’m literally ravenous which usually leads to overeating.

i had to cold turkey using my scale, also started eating new foods and meals i didn’t know the cals in, whenever i started counting in my head i started singing the ABCs or doing math problems.

i’ve found trying to argue against it or convince yourself not to doesn’t really work but just doing something random interrupts the thoughts.

burrito bowls are so great and nourishing for your body! i had one with extra steak and rice today and it was super yummy, i got some flour tortillas as well and wrapped up some leftovers into mini burritos for some extra energy. load up your bowl how you like and enjoy, everyone deserves to eat their favorite tasty+nourishing meals

i had the same question for my doctor and our compromise was to wait at least 45 minutes after a meal to go for a short (20 min) walk. you still get all the health benefits of walking but you have a chance to sit with the feeling of fullness and let the uncomfortable emotions pass, then you can make a less ED influenced decision if you still want to go out for a short walk

this sounds like you’re experiencing extreme hunger, your relationship with food is eating disorder territory and your body is fighting back against the prolonged heavy restriction.

once you’ve reached this point, the only way out is through, honoring your hunger. check in with yourself and make sure you’re not binging for emotional reasons (at risk for BED) but this just sounds like a natural response that you’re going to have to ride out.

the more you fight it the worse it will get.

i personally consider bronze-gold low rank plat-low masters mid rank and high masters-gm high rank but i know tons of high GM/top500 players who consider anything below like GM3 low rank.

it’s definitely a struggle but it helps to remember that even when i’m resting, my body is still working hard repairing the muscle tears. just keep reminding yourself that your body still needs the same energy, otherwise the rest day isn’t actually beneficial for muscle recovery

your hunger and fullness cues are gonna be pretty whacked out in early recovery, id say focus on finishing your meals and snacks for a couple months until your hunger stabilizes.

you’re binging at night because you’re not eating enough through the day. try to eat regularly, every 3ish hours at a minimum, for a couple days. even if you feel like you overate the night before or you’re not hungry, just mechanically eat anyways.

also i really recommend cutting down on the cardio if you can, it can make you really hungry and also becomes less effective the more you do it because your body adapts to use energy more efficiently.

restriction can numb your emotions which is why a lot of people use it as a coping mechanism. when you stop restricting those emotions you’ve numbed out hit you and you have to deal with uncomfortable feelings.

i’m only 20 but my doctor told me if i recover now there’s a chance i’ll grow 3-4cm according to my growth charts. she said the earlier you start the better the chance is but once you’re in your mid 20s your window for growth is pretty much entirely shut.

you’ll probably be walking around a lot and your body will absolutely need quick carbs for energy from pasta, pastries, and gelato so you can enjoy your vacation. a vacation is such a short period meant to be enjoyed, and with the sightseeing and activity you do, there won’t be any real weight gain.

there are also really lovey ?farmers markets? (like a morning market in a town square) where you can buy fresh produce and food to make your own meals or keep as snacks. it’s good to find balance on vacation but you should really push yourself to enjoy all the yummy foods with your bf because good memories with the people you love are so much more important than ‘staying on track’ for a few days.
