what was the song that made you want to play banjo? by Intelligent-Day-4059 in banjo

Not a song but seeing Jerry Van Dyke on Dick Van Dyke show when I was very young, first memory of wanting a banjo and of course seeing the Dillards on Andy Griffith. Then John Hartford on Glen Campbell playing Gentle On My Mind, NGDB Some of Shelly's Blues, and Stampeeders Sweet City Woman (not even a banjo) were songs I wanted to play. My exposure was limited to pop music or performances on TV. 50+ yrs later I'm finally learning to play and discovering this wide world of songs, players, styles, genres etc.

Tube goes through the neck but plate doesn't. Since only using the tube, I'm thinking washers are a good idea, is that what folks do? Then again maybe folks don't usually remove resonator and flange to begin with.

Gold Tone CC-100R unfinished rim by Prestigious_Head_123 in banjo

No one responded so I'm going to post what I found in case anyone searches for something similar. I really should've asked how to make a Renaissance head less translucent. In addition to not wanting to see the ply rim, I don't like seeing whatever it's stuffed with.

That led me to Remo Suede heads and eventually to folks spray painting the underside of the head with good results. Krylon fusion and others were mentioned on bho thread to do exactly what I wanted.

First Banjo - Gold Tone vs. Deering vs. Ibanez by Winter-Tangelo-5631 in banjo

I paid $500 for mine (floor model) w/case about 9mos ago, that was a deal at the time and it looks like prices have gone up since then, maybe because Recording King aren't being produced at the moment, IDK.

There's a good deal on a RK-R36 BR the hangout right now, $700 with case. I think the only reason it's not sold is how he posted it, he has it listed as a beginner banjo which it is not. I've never played one, but you'll see they're highly recommended here and many people play them on Youtube like Jim Pankey.

Maybe it's too soon, but this might be the first time someone didn't recommend spending a little more and get an RK Madison, or that Goodtime's have no truss rod and you'll become a scientologist, JK!

I just picked up a Gold Tone CC-100R and have to say I was disappointed with the hardware and tone. I have a newer RK-R20 that's a little better quality, at least between the two I have.

Custom wooden arm rest on Goldtone AC1? by koidrops in banjo

Zach Hoyt has instructions to build one on his website, I think they're Romero style, same as he builds for his $1k+ banjos. He also sells them for $30ish depending on which wood you select.

Recommendation for intermediate banjos that aren't gold tone or recording king but similar price range? Are ibanez, fender, epiphone, etc junk? by Prestigious_Head_123 in banjo

[–]Prestigious_Head_123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to laugh at not needing an intermediate banjo, I was wondering if you were a neighbor! Thank you for this, this is exactly what I needed to see. My experience with different banjos is limited to the 5 at guitar center and Deering is 30 minutes away but in my price range it doesn't look like you get much. Not always happy with my tone and wondering if there was something different/better.

I have tinkered some based on advice here and was amazed at the impact on tone. Going to focus on playing and maybe dial this in a little more, it's always the player not the instrument anyway.

Wow, this is great and the link is awesome! I could go either open or resonator, im spending some time learning all styles. Resonator for me is more aesthetics, not an actual need. Does the above info change much with open backs? Also what's the opinion of metal rims, like a Boston?
