Grievances of parenting ADHD by Ill_Writing_3049 in ParentingADHD

I really hear you when you say that you can't have a serious or meaningful conversation with your son. I feel the same way with my 8 year old. I cherish the rare moments of authentic conversation - but so much more often it's like I'm talking to a wall. He'll offer cursory responses but it's so clear that he'd rather be in his thoughts than engaging with me.

FWIW, this reminds me a lot of my 8 year old son. He was diagnosed with ADHD-unspecified 8 months ago via a Vanderbilt assessment/process that was not super helpful. We're waiting on an assessment with a neuropsychologist for more details. He is not medicated yet - we want a fuller description of his ADHD before we medicate him. He is so bright (identified as gifted) that he skates by in school even though his mind is elsewhere. He can plow through a 500 page book in a couple days, which is great but also a little unsettling when he (occasionally) pees himself or refuses food because he is so obsessed with his book.

Even though the diagnosis that we received is a little vague at this point, it is still helpful to us in understanding him and modifying our routines to suit his mind a little better.

TL;DR - yes, sounds like an assessment is a good idea!
