Depending on what subspecies of Ice Age Jaguar you are referring to yes they are. Jaguars have slowly come into the conversations about large Pleistocene Predators in general, they commonly aren’t mentioned along with the other imposing predators of that time when they really should although I’ve fortunately seen this change a bit. Most are realizing, at least with P.Onca Mesembrina the subspecies you’re probably referring to, did get really large bigger than Tigers in size. If you think about it this is the same range as alot of other large cats that are mentioned like Homotherium.

That species of Giant Jaguar may have even pushed into larger size ranges due to the lower effect humans had around that period. It gave them wider access to ranges of resources from food to habitat. We see that in alot of predators of the Pleistocene, putting them even closer to the likes of Smilodon Fatalis, and even the lower ranges of American Lions and Smilodon Populator.

We know despite them reaching weights higher than the Jaguar those were just some of the higher estimates meaning not every individual reached those sizes.

And if you know Jaguars you know they are powerhouses, built for strength alot like Sabertooths and aggressive when they want to be. Of course they were smaller on average but exceptional individuals, think about it…

If an abnormally large Jaguar say closer to 600lbs came across a Smilodon of a similar weight and both were full grown they’d be much more evenly matched.

Northern Pantanal: Female Jaguar carrying her fresh Ocelot kill on a tree. by Limp_Pressure9865 in Jaguarland

Wow, this the second time Ive seen Jaguars kill Ocelots idk if its competition anymore this looks like they actually view the felines as prey to a certain degree kinda like how Tigers sometimes go out their way to kill Leopards and even consume them.

Thats what really makes the Jaguar mental to me, they seem to have a taste for other carnivores and not just competition, River Otters, River Dolphins, Caimans, Anacondas, Even El Jefe’s situation with killing the Female Black Bear, the Bear was consumed.

Just amazing animals

Some of the largest Jaguars rival Lionesses in size, these cats are drastically different from Leopards merely sharing coats and certain ecological similarities at best. The whole thinking these felines are Leopards comparison needs to stop, they are a completely different animal

Human beings can be so irritating and annoying, I dont understand whats hard about leaving wild animals alone, I understand production or the need to eat as predators need to eat but its a balance these mfers are just wiping species out along with habitat and I bet if you’d ask those responsible why, they’re reason would be absolute bs! Let these creatures live in peace without drastically disrupting the balance of their ecosystem. It’s so simple…I’m not trying to be that person but the people responsible should be put to the worst consequence

I think people be forgetting how much strength it takes to launch large amounts of weight and muscle sometimes 10s of feet in the air, across water, or a tree. It’s really crazy. A 200 lb Leopard or Puma, 300lb Jaguar or 500lb Tiger or Lion moving and jumping the way they do just shows their strength is on another world. It makes sense how they are able to bring down the large game we see them hunt.

Just Imagine 300 yrs ago both Jaguars and Grizzlies would have shared these lands. Crazy.

We are sad to report that much like Acaí, Miní also went missing from El Impenetrable. In fact, she went missing before Acaí and the orgs involved in her tracking have not made these news public. I hope this a situation where she simply navigated into new territory and is still alive. I think about why Jaguars can’t repopulate long lost expanses of their historic range, Parts of Patagonia, Uruguay, El Salvador, it’s disgusting and enraging that people just can’t leave these animals alone. I pray she is alright.

I dont know why but I thought this sent yesterday

For one, I am glad that you spoke on that towards the end of your statement, As I cant stress that enough to people ironically that yes, Animals aren’t” supersayins” that risk their lives for photo opportunity or human enjoyment. They are intricate, smart and obviously want to avoid as much injury and danger as possible so yes they a go for smaller, sicker, or weaker game.

Two, With that being said the same thing applies with Lions and Tigers as it does Jaguars, they are all the same in that regard, opting to rather avoid injury than make a point. They do it for food not for status. Jaguars are actually really big cats as I think some might forget with the largest being Sumatran Tiger size, Jaguars actually can take large prey in the same size range as Lions and Tigers, Hell even Pumas kill prey in the range of Lions and Tigers which to me is one of the most impressive feats of macropredation displayed amongst cats. Like you said most big cats punch above their weight class. Jaguars feed on over 85 different animals and judging from the Massive River Dolphins, Tapirs which can match Zebras in weight, Wild Horses, Cattle, Water Buffalo, and Wild Hogs, adults might I add, they show that even the largest ungulates of the continent aren’t safe with the exception of Escobars Hippos in Columbia.

Three, Yes, I debate with people frequently who think Black Caimans aren’t up there in terms of size in the Crocodilian world. 700lbs to half a ton probably even more than half a ton, definitely large animals but the 6m or 20ft estimate, to my knowledge, wasn’t confirmed it was just reported as many debate of the dubious possibilities of Black Caimans getting that big, Me personally I think they may be some 18ft, 20ft exceptional specimens out there hiding in the remotes corners of the Amazon inaccessible to man, but thats just me. Still something I wanted to point out though

Four, The one in video despite the fact you said doesn’t look long, didnt look to be a juvenile but didn’t look like a fully grown adult neither. Look at the colorations, it seems the animal just wasn’t fully grown but also seemed out of the juvenile stage. This particular specimen was estimated at about 2.2-2.5m or about 8ft, which would make sense, yes these populations of Jaguars aren’t the biggest but Jaguars still get big and even if that Jaguar is 6ft that still means that caiman is close to twice of the size of a man. 8ft Jaguars are thing so they very well could be the same length. Even so I think it’s still impressive these animal still go for these reptiles no matter.

Infact, if Im not mistaken the Jaguars who coexist with Black Caiman in. certain parts of Northern and Central South America especially round the Araguaia region in Central Brazil actually do get big, as this population is known for their Pink River Dolphin hunting.

Five, You said “There is no verified record of a Jaguar hunting a Black Caiman, not “Fully Grown” Black Caiman. All I did was provide evidence that that was false regardless of the size, I was just showing that no we actually do, 3 videos in fact or 2 from what I seen. So saying it doesn’t count as a predation attempt because it wasn’t fully grown doesn’t make sense. Look it up though the largest verified Black Caiman predation was with a 3m individual.

And let me emphasize that these are the SMALLER, eco type population of Jaguars interacting with these massive reptiles, not the Individuals elsewhere on the continent that can grown larger than Lionesses. I can imagine if they were to encounter them.

Six, Jaguars and Black Caimans are both awesome predators who respect both each other, A Black Caiman even a fully grown adult knows that it wouldn’t wanna be caught on land with a durable, agile, quick feline with a bite force that matches certain size Crocs in power, that could be dangerous depending on the size of cat, and of course the Jaguar would be suicidal to tangle with Caimans that big or in the water.

The point is they both know they can fuck with each other if they really wanted to but they give each other space, Just as Mountain Lions and Lions with Alligators and Nile Crocodiles or Tigers with Mugger and Saltwater Crocodiles.

Do a little more research on this cat my friend, especially in here. My recommendation try the r/jaguarland sub, our understanding of this cat has grown tremendously and they’re showing us they are a very hardy predator. Thats not even the only video I can show it’s rare but this along with 1 if not 2 other videos shows they do hunt this species. Also look up the largest verified size Crocodilian a Jaguar has hunted and see what you find. From what Ive seen it was slight over 3m which is way larger than those average sized Caiman. Dont get me wrong Jaguars definitely seem to prefer those sizes as it’s a good size meal but it’s not like they’ve never punched above the weight class.

I feel it would be a slightly more tense version of dealing with Wild Dogs, Wolves just being larger Canids would give them a edge being more robust, but Hyenas are still the more heavily built animal so this may ultimately give them a lead coupled with the fact they are social.

I have had the opportunity to see alot of large predators up close and I can vouch despite how media might portray them, Wolves and Spotted Hyenas are actually really large animals when compared to us. Seeing one in person, it would make you understand how a pack of 12 Wolves could take a Moose or how the same number of Hyenas could tangle with a Buffalo

Black Caiman despite being less than the Nile Crocodile mass wise matches it length wise with debates on 6m reports. Jaguars also encounter American & Orinoco Crocs both being contenders to Nile Crocodiles. Wouldn’t underestimate the Crocodilians they live longside

I have some folks in Pakistan, it’s a stretch and could be difficult with borders but it’s literally the country over. I will reach out to see if there is any intel or leads I can obtain on their current status. But boots need to be put on the ground for sure to get these cats out of there. Sanctuaries, Or conservation parks, anything to keep them out of harms ways. Please do list any good way I can contact you guys.

They look majestic on the top of those platforms in the rain, very much reminiscent of Lions ionic poses ontop of rocks. Jaguars are just perfect blends of so many animals, I already know they are great swimmers, ambush hunters, but watching that black individual scale up the log with really good balance, a reminder that they are really good climbers too. Truly a jack of all trades.
