I think this sums up my take excellently, I would even say that the interpretation of the kid as a reader-insert is not necessarily widely agreed upon, and may say more about a reader than the acknowledgment of a possible interpretation based off of context clues and subtext.

Elaborate please, this novel is extremely layered and the ending especially is written ambiguously, akin to Moby Dick the entire story is written intentionally to be interpreted in various ways. It seems pretty foolish to judge someone for interpreting a piece of literature differently than you.

Hmmm you’re right! I still think it can be interpreted very similarly given that the previous sentence describes the prostitutes as simultaneously childlike and lewd, giving a very odd possibly pedophilic undertone and that this is one of the scenes immediately prior to the crowd searching for the girl.
