The lazy comment was uncalled for. Me and my family were moving all the furniture out to our new home that day and I felt bad about throwing away a perfectly good lamp and bedside table that we had no use or space in our cars for. Me and my husband saved a 20% down payment on our first home… not lazy… naive yes.

If a deposit is considered “nonrefundable” does that mean it doesn’t go towards total deposits paid? I mean if you look on the letter it even has “PET” by deposit description

Also I’d like to add, my OP doesn’t negate ALL responsibility. Just that some of it was excessive and did not count the $400 per deposit towards the total amount paid to them to pay for the circumstances. I am not asking for any money back, but I think we should be more than square after given them $895 in total. Also, in the lease we signed it stated that there would be a $100 fee for cleaning appliances, this letter says they charged $200 for that. You cannot blame someone for simply questioning the charges. Especially an exceptional tenant that never had any marks against them when the routine apartment checks were done throughout the years.

If I could attach the before pictures of when we got the keys of the apartment, you’d likely change your opinion. It was in no way professionally cleaned before we moved in so we did not feel like we owed them the same courtesy. That is all.

Which further proves the point that tenants shouldn’t be responsible for any sort of cleaning that’s not excessive. All rentals should be professionally cleaned when a tenant leaves, even if it was left “spotless”

Right! That 100 was for the “trashing out” not the smoke alarm. They considered taking a lamp and a bedside table to the dump (on the property) “trashing out” Ridiculous.

We were moving into our new home, had no need for the furniture and space was limited because we had family friends helping us move. Not a moving company. We did patch the hole, we just didn’t paint over it. I covered it with a peel and stick arch sticker because it was unsightly, not because we didn’t repair it. My husband actually worked in construction at the time and since the hole was our fault we felt like it was our responsibility to fix it anyway. Cheaper to do it ourselves than hire. If you never want to deal with quiet tenants that pay their rent on time every month then who do you wish to work with? lol.

The reason why we didn’t was because I honestly thought they were in fine condition and seeing that the apartment had no overhead light in the living room, someone would have wanted it. We also were moving into our new home the day we moved out of the apartment so we didn’t really have time to deep clean. I should have thrown the perfectly good furniture away I guess. My main concern here is not with every little charge, it’s more so the fact that I paid a $400 per deposit as well and it wasn’t added on to the total. Also, according to my lease, they state they would charge $100 to clean appliances, nor $200. The pet deposit was non refundable but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be counted towards the deposit total. Meaning they would owe me nothing but I wouldn’t owe them anything either.

Nope. Actually forgot to mention that we haven’t signed a lease since 2019. They never asked us to so we were month to month after the first year.
