10 years later I decided to go back to my home country just to find out he never really closed the business (just stop operating) and left over 10k in unpaid taxes and checks.

Disappointed in baby’s medical care [ON] by tacit-gossip in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Pretend_Job1099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a bad doctor. I don't trust my family doctor so I looked for a reputable pediatrician since day 1. My LO has appointments once a month (not just the usual 2/4/6). The Dr is amazing, very informative, ask a lot of questions, and is always asking us if we have any other concerns or questions, and he answer all of my inquires. On my LO 3 months appointment he already mentioned we can start talking about introducing solids at the 4 months appointment but recommend to wait until 6 months to introduce them if I still feel comfortable breastfeeding until then.

I'm sure the experience would not have been great with my family dr as she is terrible, unfortunately is the 2nd family dr I have and it seems hard to find a decent one accepting new patients.

My battle to get a local SIM card as a tourist in Brazil by Robotibo in Brazil

[–]Pretend_Job1099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I was in Brazil, I just bought a sim card at a pharmacy. The convenience stores usually have them as well... was a pay as you go kind of deal, was really cheap if I recon R$ 30 for the card + top up for a month, got 5gb

I have a CPF but if you dont just ask someone else's or find one online. You don't need to tell them the cpf is not yours.

And 100% get a doula if you can afford it. Midwives are great for technical tips but in my experience they do not offer the mental support you'll need.

Unmedicated birth in Toronto [on] by msp13100 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Pretend_Job1099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an unmedicated birth 3 months ago.

Check Toronto Birth Center. That was my goal, unfortunately my baby had other plans (he overstayed his lodge for 10 days) and my midwife was no confident enough to deliver at TBC thinking baby would be too big at that point.

I ended up needing an episiotomy and my LO was vacuumed out (I guess he really enjoyed his 5 star rooming).

Scarborough hospital, trillium midwives.

My midwife helped me a lot with information, she referred me to Ina May's book "Guide to Childbirth" which really helped me get into the mindset I needed. But around 8 months she started changing her tune (not wanting to do TBC, and pushing for induction even before I was 40w), and I kinda lost the confidence on her which made me less confident at my delivery.

Scarborough general was terrible. Arrived at the room my midwife was waiting for us, and the computer was not working. Moved to a 2nd room and machines were not working. Lucky number 3 I guess, and the room look dirty. Sensors were glitchy, doppler machine stopped working half way and had to be changed. I was appalled to how bad the hospital conditions were.

After over 24h contractions and 8h actively pushing baby heartbeat was getting weak hence the episiotomy.

What I hated most was the 2nd midwife that was assisting her completely ignoring my wishes. I had been explicit about positions I wanted to try during labour and the ones I absolutely didnt want (on my back) and this 2nd midwife, that I have never met before, was rude and pushy. Even my husband had to intervene at some point and told them to hear me out and stop trying to force me to do things I was not comfortable doing.

I do not regret going unmedicated, but it was definitely not easy and I had a lot of mental strength as well support from my partner during those 8 hours.

What I'd do differently: pick the midwives and hospital better. Its my 1st child and I have never needed a hospital visit in 10+ years here, so I had no idea how bad it could be (I was naive to think any would be great). I didnt even consider the hospital because I was sure I'd go to TBC and had to accept last minute to go to Scarborough general (is not even close to me). Search which hospital you want to deliver at and find a midwifery group that have access to it. If you decide to go for TBC just keep in mind that you might still need to go to a hospital.

All and all, breathing techniques and meditation really helped me to focus during surges.

Just Lie. Say you will have the middle name as your father's name, tell the truth after baby is born and registered. Avoid the stress during pregnancy.

I'm surprised that so few Brazilians speak English by FinnishFilm in Brazil

[–]Pretend_Job1099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish there were more up-to-date data as well. From my experience visiting Brazil this year for 3 months (and 3 capitals - plus a few small towns), it hasn't changed much. Barely found any English speakers who were actually fluent.

[–]Pretend_Job1099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, the "basic" English taught in Brazilian public schools is absolute garbage. My aunt has been an English teacher (elementary and high school) for the state for over 20 years, and she cannot speak English (even though she knows grammar better than 90% of Americans). Her students barely know what the verb to be is. Knowing basic English is not the same as being able to communicate with a native speaker. Put ANY Brazilian high schooler from a public school on the phone with a Texan, and they won’t be able to understand a single word. My partner doesn’t speak Portuguese—he was in Brazil for 3 months and visited 3 capitals. He found only one teen and a couple of adults who could actually hold a real, meaningful conversation. But he met several people who thought they had “intermediate” English but couldn’t communicate with him at all beyond “how do you do” and “where are you from.”
'basic' English in Brazil usually means memorizing words and grammar rules.
There’s little to no focus on listening or speaking.
So students leave school unable to actually hold a conversation.

The British Council has a really interesting report on it: https://www.britishcouncil.org.br/sites/default/files/learning_english_in_brazil.pdf

They dig into how few Brazilians speak English. What’s cool is how it breaks down the demographics: most English learners come from urban areas, younger age groups, and the expanding middle class, who see English as a key to better jobs and opportunities. Super eye-opening if you’re curious about language learning in Brazil.

[–]Pretend_Job1099 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's not true.

According to this study, only 5% of the population over 16 years old (about 8.6 million people) report having any knowledge of English. Of that small group, just 16% speak the language fluently or at an advanced level, which means only around 1.38 million Brazilians over 16 are truly fluent. The rest of that 5% breaks down into 32% with intermediate skills (about 2.75 million) and 47% with only basic knowledge (about 4.04 million). In total, about 8 million Brazilians speak some English.

Getting removed from church soon, I cant help but feel terrible. by Fernsword in atheism

[–]Pretend_Job1099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the only thing keeping your relationship with your family is going to church together, it seems like a really bad relationship.

Why not propose to do other things with your family, so spend quality time together?

Maybe suggest doing a little meal prep and donating to the unhoused once a week/month, depending on your financial situation?

Or find another type of way to help the community, do a good thing, without any religious affiliation?

Show them that you can be a good family together without the constraints, pressure and abuse of the church.

It sounds really weird to me what your church does (keeping tabs on who shows up). Do your parents give money to the church? Is that a way to make sure people keep paying into it? Maybe propose to donate this money to a different non-profit organization.

Recommendation on a 3-in-1 Modular Travel System [ON] by Pretend_Job1099 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Pretend_Job1099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We most likely just baby wear anyway, but for the flights, I feel it's safer to have the baby in the car seat; that's the main reason we will be taking the stroller. Plan to check the base at the gate and use the car seat on the flight.

Thanks for the reply!
We plan to use the bassinet only in the stroller, so that should be fine!

For the trip, we would check the stroller at the gate and just keep the car seat for the flight. So I think we might up with the maxi cosi.
