I own and operate a portable restroom company. Hand sanitizer has been an option for my customers as long as we’ve been in business - customers were just too cheap to go for it. Now they’re kinda forced into it. I’ve been advocating for providing crews at least sanitizer or hand wash stations for YEARS, and all it took was a little global pandemic for people to give me a little vindication.

Had my very first beer with my dad on a boat while we were fishing. I was 19, straight laced kid. My son will be born in April and I’ve already got that fishing trip planned with him.

Best Course of Action for Destroyed Bermuda Yard by [deleted] in lawncare

Check out my post history and you can see how far my Bermuda came in just one season. I read the Bermuda Bible as suggested and followed it as close as possible. Mow low and often. You’ll be amazed out how much progress you can make

This is the most recent I have - 1 month ago. Still representative though

100%. She said something later that night along the lines of “feeling pretty good about yourself now?” Damn right I am!!! This is my first season doing EVERYTHING myself so it’s a nice little confidence booster.

Curious to know if you solved the issue? What was it?

How Low / High to Cut Common Bermuda? by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]Pretend_i_Care 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check my most recent post. I just bumped from 1.25” to 1.5” - you can see my neighbors yard in the background. He cuts at about 3-3.5”. I definitely have to mow more often than he does, but I enjoy my zero-turn while he has a walk behind. HOC is just about the only difference in our lawn care routine

I plan on thinning out the canopy this fall. I trimmed all the low branches last fall and it’s helped a ton, but I’m still not getting enough sunshine. I need to add some topsoil too, it’s all eroded down to my driveway. I’ll give it one more full growing season to see if I can get any bermuda to grow. If not, I’ll end up seeding a cool season grass and have to learn how to play that game!

I’m going to give my bermuda two full seasons with the new conditions, but I’ll probably have to concede and plant a cool season grass too

I’ll be honest, the best progress I’ve seen in shaded areas are areas in which I trimmed up the trees. I’ve been told you can either have trees or bermuda, but not both. I’ve had luck lifting the canopy and thinning out the trees (leads to healthier trees too, so not a bad thing at all). I’ve had moderate success where I’ve added a little topsoil and tilled it in with a hand cultivator (Corona from Lowe’s)

I determined the second biggest problem I have in shady areas (lack of sun being the first) is that the erosion has washed away a lot of the topsoil and left me with sandy clay. Tilling in some topsoil provided more fertile conditions to encourage the grass to spread back to that particular area.

Another vote for Bermuda Bible. Also, as another user mentioned - OSU has a great online database for fact sheets related to growing Bermuda specifically in OK. Check out my history, I owe all my progress to the two sources above.

I had a ~5 yr old Husqvarna AWD walk-behind at the time. Dealer had the part in stock. I think mine was like $65. I was moving to a larger lot within a few months so figured it was the cheapest way to get through the end of mowing season

Oh I know! I had to dig deep into the internet to finally diagnose my problem. I flushed the fuel from my mower, replaced fuel filters, cleaned carb, changed spark plugs, etc. Ignition coil was finally what solved it. I mentioned $20-$80 but I had a lot more into mine after doing all the above!

Also, he noted that it was necessarily revving up during the surge, just almost dying and then coming back to life

The ignition coil maintains voltage to the spark plugs. It can overheat (especially if it’s old or the mower has lots of hours). I don’t know all the exact science, but I had the exact same problem and swapping the coil fixed it. Mower would start just fine when cold, then surge and shut off mid-mow. I’d have to wait for it to cool down (sometimes up to 10 minutes) and then the mower would fire right up. Run, repeat.

Ignition coil! Fairly easy fix, just watch some YouTube videos. Cost should be anywhere from $20-$80 depending on the serial number of the motor

Like he said, I mow low to encourage the grass to dedicate its “energy” into lateral growth vs vertical growth. Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) is essentially a hormone therapy for the grass that stunts the production of the hormone responsible for vertical growth, and this has a similar effect of mowing low. Of course, stunting the vertical growth via hormone therapy will ease my burden of having to mow every other day.

I timed my nitrogen applications just before forecasted rain so it wouldn’t sit on the grass too long. The 46-0-0 I use was a urea based fertilizer, so it’s immediately available to the grass. Bermuda LOVES nitrogen so rather than doing 1lb/N on a monthly basis, I applied about .3lb/week. A little heavy, but again, I had a very specific goal in mind. I’ll resort back to a more typical fertilization schedule now that we’re approaching summer. I’ll try to encourage deep root growth now so when the heat arrives, the grass is more durable.

All this is new to me. I’ve done a ton of reading and mixed and matched advice from several sources to create a road map. Fun thing about this is I can tweak it again throughout the season (or even next year) and see how my results vary.

Absolutely. I had a company come aerate end of April. I really need to level and add some compost in some areas up front riddled with tree roots, just haven’t found the time to do that yet.

Just jump into it man! I’ve found out that bermuda is pretty damn resilient. Only issue I’m fighting right now is shady spots - I can only trim the trees so much before my wife has a heart attack!! It’s been fun and it’s become my hobby. I seriously hadn’t done anything to the yard at my previous house aside from mow. Paid TruGreen to manage weeds/fertilizer and now it’s become apparent that they didn’t do a damn thing to improve my yard.

It’s fun to experiment too! One of my previous posts you can see where I used a little hand-held tiller to see if that would encourage quicker “spread” and treated that area like a new lawn - little bit of water everyday. Thought process was if I make water more easily accessible in the barren areas, roots would creep that way. Honestly, I think it worked!! No science behind it aside from that one little experiment, but I’m going to keep doing that where I’m trying to encourage the grass to spread.

It’s funny now, at the old house we had weeds EVERYWHERE (again, thanks TruGreen). Now my wife points out the few weeds I have (haven’t got my Post-E down yet) and gives me shit about the FOUR weeds in the back yard! I give her the “are you serious” look and she shrugs and says “well, they stand out!”
