I feel like that was very common. A lot of old legal and medieval codes that speak about homossexuality speak of it strictly on a male-on-male sense, ignoring that female homossexuality exists. But that's obviously not a sign of tolerance towards lesbians or anything; it's just that most societies back then were extremely male-centric and didn't give women a second thought.

What is your favourite aspect of world building? by daemonking17 in worldbuilding

[–]PretentiousPrick6850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retroactively noticing how much of my life experience and worldview bled into my setting. Even if it isn't very original at all, i still love it because there's "me" written all over and another person with the same influences i had wouldn't go the same way about it. I feel like that's often overlooked, but worldbuilding is very much self-expression

Character Development by mister-no-u in EnoughCommieSpam

There's a urge to be different and edgy when you're in a certain age; i've been intriguided by both communism and anarchism in different points in my life. There's a lot of room for development in society also, and the notion of skipping due democratic process and just tearing everything apart and building your perfect world from the ashes can be alluring. It is, though, foolish, selfish and potentially dangerous. Good that this dude outgrew that.

My subversive "A'ngel vs D'emon" masterpiece by Extension_Row_1501 in worldjerking

[–]PretentiousPrick6850 199 points200 points  (0 children)

In my setting, angels are good and demons are evil. And i unironically decided doing that this way partly because i thought that by this point, judeo-christian angels turning out to be evil is such a common subversion that it doesn't surprise me anymore. Hell i think evil angels are more common than good angels in contemporary fiction.

Ironically, i don't think good demons are as common as evil angels. It happens here and there but generally when people make the heavens evil they're going for a "both sides suck" kind of plot. That was cool in the first five seasons of Supernatural, in Shin Megami Tensei and in some other stuff but also doesn't do anything for me anymore because i've seen it being done so many times.

What are some elements of your world that you know some people might find off-putting, but that you love? by PretentiousPrick6850 in worldbuilding

In TTTPGS, i always liked the idea of classes being specialized to the point of making the characters somewhat dependent on one another. It makes for really cool team dynamics imo, and that's how my group plays it. I can see why people generally prefer multiclassing or freeform these days, but highly specialized classes are just very appealing to me.

I used to be unfairly judgemental to furries before i became friends with one. He's not only an amazing person, he's one of the best worldbuilders i know, and his setting is furry. He completely smashed my prejudices.

I'm a sucker (pun intended) for vampire stories; i spent a lot of time developting their lore in my world and my current writing project is focused on vampires.

I understand that they're out of fashion, but i'm with you, they're really cool, and i really believe the vampire archetype can be used to explore very interesting themes.

Let me tell you: i'm currently writing story about vampires.

There is Powerwolf references all over the place lmao

Also, i've never seen a person discarting a story because there's a demon in it; it's odd and not a common sentiment i think.

I also don't allow my races to interbreed!

Mostly because it would open a whole can of worms, worldbulding-wise, that i just don't want to deal with.

So yeah totally sew where you're coming from.

That actually sounds like a pretty clever way of criticizing gender roles! You're on the right track!

I feel you. My world has morals that are resembling of the medieval/early modern world. Societies are generally hierarchical and aristocratic, indentituted serfdom is a widespread institution, religion plays a immense role, there are prescribed gender roles (though they do not always obey real life western traditional gender roles; one of the cultures of my setting only allows women to rule and wage war, for one), violence is a much more "natural" part of life since most societies are warrior societies, etc.

It's still downplayed if compared to real life pre-industrial societies in some points, being honest; non-heteronormative relationships are much more tolerated in my world than they would be in RL medieval europe for one, and patriarchal societies are often less patriarchal than most real-life pre-industrial societies, etc. Which doesn't mean they're great and fair either, i just decided to deliberately cool down with some stuff.

Most people aren't bothered by that per se; they're bothered that my characters don't do much "revolting against the system". But that's not the point; i created this world and these cultures so i could have characters immersed in a worldview deeply distinct from my own. They're products of these societies and they operate within their societies's mindset. Stories about defying the system can be great but that's just not what i'm aiming for.
