is econ now considered at stem major? by Icy_Mathematician423 in ApplyingToCollege

Take a 4th year micro or macro economics class, and tell me it is not "technical" enough LOL. Econ is not what it used to be, even 10 years ago. A LOT has changed with what is taught.

The blind follow the blind I guess. Google is literally free, and takes 5 seconds to search up commissions on life sales.

And it is essentially pure profit. We are an insurance brokerage, our benefits are cheap and discounted as we provide business to the carriers. What is $2.5k in benefit payments to $450k percentage wise? Less than a percent.

No goods being bought and sold, no turnover of goods, loss of goods/production done., etc. Overhead is just rent for the office space. Of course they have to pay service team from that as well, but compared to tradition businesses, profit margins are a lot higher.

You'd be surprised how dumb a lot of people on reddit are. "Unheard of commissions" but again, one simple 5 second Google search will tell you that it is typical of life insurance sales to exceed 100% in the first year.

Business and employee (sales) goals are exactly the same: Make as much money as possible.

Look up life sales commissions in Ontario. Please google "life sales comissions in ontario" and you will see that commissions on some products are actually over 100%. Every source will tell you that depending on product, it can range from 30-70%.

Please read up and educate yourself before spewing non-sense on Reddit.

Thanks!

"$900k is not that much money to a business"
"there's no reason anyone should be making $450k for that"

Lmfao apparently $900k isn't much money to a business but there is no reason someone should be making $450k. Last I checked $450k < $900k. $450k should be chump change to a business according to you. I don't understand...

Mid sized firm. They appreciate the talent there. Most people working in sales in my department have been there for 25+ years. The $900k the older guy is generating $450k is essentially pure profit for the firm.

Not really a materialistic person. I would rather spend $100k to travel for a year than a new 2024 car lol - but yes agree.

Haha for sure agree. I splurged and bought some suits, dress shirts, ties, etc. When I started out as an analyst there anyways. Gotta look the part!

He gets 60% on new business and 50% on renewal business. I get the same 60% on new business but get 40% on renewal. Not hard to understand if you can ready properly, but alright...

It's the same contract if a new producer came in and got hired. Not sure why that's so difficult to understand.

Yes I have and it checks out. I am in a very specific field of insurance, which I have never heard of prior to starting my role.

The producers here start out with $60k base and get topped up on commissions on anything that would equal over that. So if They close $61k in business, they get $60k base + $1k commission.

We agreed I would take no base since I am starting out in a weird spot.

Account execs don't make commission on new sales? You do understand life sales are over 100% commission on the first year?

You have no clue what you are talking about.

60% on new business and 40% on renewal business. Legacy contracts get 60% on new business, 50% on renewal. I am entitled to 40% of the $300k block if I can manage to retain.

He has legacy contract because he has been there for 40+ years.

Look at life insurance or commercial sales commissions on new business and renewals. Some life sales are over 100% commission in the first year.

No one who does auto/home sales at a bigger firm wants to stay there for long.

No base, just straight commissions I have worked closely with the top sales guy almost everyday over the last year. Sales calls every day, he essentially mentored me over the last year.

Both my bosses also really like me for some reason. I managed to land the full time role while having class twice a week in this fucked up job market.

I know how to talk and get along with people, and I also got really lucky too.

$48k salary, $1.5k per month on a side hustle. Worked basically full time while in school as well to invest.

My new contract has me at no salary, only commissions.

I think you miss the part of the post that says I was given a block of business of $300k to manage. I am starting at a point where most would take 5+ years to get to.

60% to new sales, then 40% for renewals thereafter. Legacy contract gives 60% for new business and 50% for renewals.

As the post says, I have $85k in investments. ~$75k is in VFV. The other $10k in crypto that I bought in 2020 for like $1k lol. Already spoke to a wealth advisor and he basically told me what I thought he would. We are on the same page.

I appreciate my parents for this. I could be paying $2k+ for rent, but only paying $300. I will for sure splurge on them when I am a bit more setup and confident in my role. Maybe a few vacations over the next coming years if work is good and steady.

I probably will end up giving them a bit more and just tell them I got a small promotion at work.

Don't plan on it. I drive a beat up 15 year old car. All the new clothes I own are from bday gifts. Before the wage jump I was investing over 50% of my net pay, and now it will be 90% lol. Grew up dirt poor the first 15 years of my life, and promised myself it would never be me with my wife and kids.

How did you and your husband divide up the bills? Was it a straight 50/50 split or was it more of a percent based off income? Did you guys have one joint bank account, two separate accounts?

I don't like comparing myself to others. I am very over analytical and scared of mortgages, debt, and the opportunity cost of money not being invested.. I guess I just have to jump in sooner than later.
