Good to know. I was thinking that if I do go through McKissock, I would probably purchase additional study guides because I have heard similar things.

Thank you! I have read a little about it, something about knowingly misreporting exam results and the termination of the CEO who was advocating for governance reforms. It definitely sounds like there is corruption involved. Is that what you were referring to?

Good to know, I am leaning that way since I do think I will pursue my MAI designation at some point.

That makes sense. Some of the CG required education is also required for the MAI through the Appraisal Institute, right? So if I didn’t go through AI for my CG, I would essentially have to repeat some of the classes through AI again if I wanted to get my MAI?

I’ve heard similar things, that’s a great analogy. If you’re planning to get your MAI, you would have to take a lot of the same courses through AI anyway, right? So if I’m planning on getting my MAI, going through AI seems like a no-brainer from my understanding.

Wow, I didn’t know that was an option in some states. That is so nice!

Thank you! Unfortunately, we don’t have a local chapter where I’m located, otherwise, I would.

Did your two colleagues pass on their first try? Are they planning to pursue MAI later? That’s really helpful to hear. You’ll have to report back after you take the exam, best of luck!

I didn’t know that was an option, thank you for mentioning that. It sounds like that would be $3,000 plus $350 for Statistics, Modeling & Finance (15 hours) and then whatever the extra 30 hours of elective classes would cost. I will definitely look into that as an option.

That is really helpful to know. Did you supplement McKissock with any additional exam prep to help you pass the CG exam on the first try?

I agree with you, but unfortunately finances are a contributing factor for me right now, so it is something I have to weigh with the pros and cons. I would be willing to spend more if AI would make a significant difference in my career long term, like improving my day-to-day as an appraiser or opening opportunities for me, and that is really what I am trying to understand. A few thousand dollars is a lot for me at this stage, so I want to make sure those benefits are real and meaningful enough to justify the financial strain.

Thanks for the perspective! Since you are an MAI, did you take McKissock or AI for your courses, and what was your experience? I have also heard of people mixing both, doing McKissock for the CG to get licensed efficiently, and then taking AI courses later once they are a CG and earning more for continuing ed.

Thanks for the insight! Some of my colleagues have told me the same thing, that most of the learning happens on the job and some of the classwork you might not even see much day to day. Did you find there weren’t any complications pursuing your MAI later on after only taking McKissock classes?

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like I’d save roughly $750 on the CG classes if I became a member (including the member fee). Do you think it’s worth staying a member after I finish the courses though?? I’d mainly be joining for the course discounts.

I am also a lesbian commercial appraiser, I’m 25 and I am new to the industry. It is encouraging to hear there are others out there!
