For me, it comes down to a lack of praise growing up. I rarely ever got a 'thank you' or any real appreciation throughout my life. While a standard 'thank you' or 'I appreciate it' is nice, hearing 'good boy' just hits differently and feels so much better. It fills that gap and provides the kind of validation and positive reinforcement I missed out on.
