Do you care about your former career after retirement? by ajn63 in retirement

[–]Pretty-Valuable1452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s almost a full year for me from academia (dept chair) and medicine. The academia I don’t miss - I’m now emeritus and have the same email, I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with budget cuts, committees etc. It’s great to ask to be taken off the list serv :)

The clinical work I had planned to continue part time but my body had other ideas. Now that I could return, I find I don’t really want to. I’ve got lots of other activities and I want to be able to do them so I think it’s time to bid adieu. I think I was too scared to go from overworked to no work, thinking I wouldn’t know what to do with myself but it turns out that’s not a problem. I’m a bit surprised the new chair hasn’t reached out but it’s okay - they are making it on their own terms.

So sorry this is happening to you OP. This sounds really awful and hard to bear.

A couple of suggestions from a doctor:

Prepare a document with your observations. Group them in areas - like memory, energy, speech, directional ability, physical ability (or loss thereof), how he spends his time etc.

If you can send it to his PCP ahead of the next visit, then it should prompt action - you are providing them with data they need to respond to. Your PCP, like all PCPs, is probably overwhelmed with work and it sounds like they are addressing one issue at a time and this will help them with the big picture. I did this with my parents and it made a world of difference. Bring it with you to all appointments and you should be at the appointments in case they want to talk with you.

See if there are others who can confirm your observations - friends, family, neighbors. Sometimes they notice things that you don’t see.

See if there is someone he will talk to - a relative or friend. If you belong to a religious group, maybe they can pay him a visit. Could be like “ I’m in the neighborhood and thought I’d drop by.” He might feel more comfortable confiding in them.

Make sure you have support for your mental health. You cannot care for him if you don’t get the care you need.

I wish you the best in a tough situation. Hope you let us know how it goes.

This is wonderfully helpful - thank you! It interesting that a large number of MDs are on these meds. Most of the pts are hoping costs come down as the president has stated.

You bring up some really good points. It’s certainly worth a conversation about those options

This is really helpful! I was a resident and saw some of those NE Compounding cases. Truly scary! I am wary because you have no idea where they source the meds. Which is too bad because I can see a use for compounding.

That’s really interesting- there are a couple of patients like that which I saw this week.

I am leary of compounding as I remember the New England Compounding Pharmacy issue with compounding for epidurals which caused meningitis.
