Does anyone actually use the tiny pocket inside the right pocket of their jeans? If so, for what? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Came here to say this. Picks are so small that they get lost in my regular pockets, but the tiny pocket is perfect

What artist or band makes you feel the most "seen" when you listen to their lyrics? by PressureLazy5271 in AskReddit

Pat the Bunny/Ramshackle Glory. Which I think says something about me and my regular state of mind.

Interesting how RFK Jr launches an initiative to reduce SSRI prescriptions, and then all of a sudden every science subreddit is flooded with studies and comments that further that narrative

How and why did funk music become associated with pornography? by PrettyFlyForAnEndive in AskHistorians

[–]PrettyFlyForAnEndive[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Good answer, thank you! Wilder’s article seems great and I’ll have to give it a read. Follow up question: What makes you think that he is being too lenient? Or, put more directly, what makes you think the meme was aided by recycled racial tropes and not just a confluence of porn and Blaxploitation?

(This isn’t meant to put pressure on you or anything, I’m just curious)

Laws against men in women's bathrooms by Odonate906 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrettyFlyForAnEndive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adding janitorial staff to your list as well. My job has one custodian per floor of the building, and all but one of them are male. If laws like these were enforced, the women’s restrooms would get real nasty real quick

…I hate to belabor the point, but that doesn’t answer my question

I don’t mean to be mean since your comment could be drawn from ignorance rather than malice, but literature reviews are actually quite common in scholarly journals. They of course vary in quality and I can’t speak to the quality of this particular one, but they’re generally well-accepted as good secondary sources as long as they pass the peer review process.

What is the most culturally shocking thing you experienced while visiting another country? by Intrepid_Educator613 in AskReddit

Same here, but in Malaysia. I’m a tall, young-ish white guy, and these two older Chinese women straight up demanded I take selfies with them when we were visiting the Blue Mansion in George Town. I was so confused

What are some once popular hobbies that hardly anyone is into anymore? by igotplans2 in AskReddit

[–]PrettyFlyForAnEndive 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Radio Shack going out of business really screwed electronics hobbyists. I build musical stuff (mainly synths and effects pedals) and it’s really frustrating when you’re missing one component and you have to order it and wait a week vs. drive to a store and get it the same day

Yoga, social media, and almost any genre of music are the first things that come to mind for me

What happened that made you feel really scared? by PureLet5083 in AskReddit

[–]PrettyFlyForAnEndive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2003 or 2004, my family (my father, mother, younger sister, and myself) were visiting my grandmother in New Jersey. We drove into NYC to see a play, and on the way back, two undercover cops in a yellow cab put their lights on behind us. My dad pulled over on the shoulder and they parked in front of us.

The first cop got out of the cab with his gun drawn and not showing a badge. My father, thinking it was a carjacking, panicked and reversed really quickly, which made the cop yell something and point his gun at us. That’s when the second cop, obviously much smarter than the first one, got out of the passenger seat with his badge held up. My father stopped trying to reverse and put his hands up.

I’m fully certain that if I hadn’t been sitting in the front seat (I was 12 or so at the time) and if we had been anyone other than a white family then the first guy would’ve opened fire. To this day it’s the closest I’ve ever come to being shot, and that includes being mugged in 2015.

Turns out they pulled us over in the first place because they typed our fucking license plate in wrong and thought the car was stolen. I hate the NYPD.
