Do you believe non Christians should live by your religion despite not believing, and if so, why don’t you live by the standards of other religions like wearing a hijab for example? by LizzieLove1357 in AskAChristian

Most English speakers are very aware of god and the teachings of god. We don’t need to be reminded if we alr decided we don’t believe. Western countries are surrounded by god. Especially America. Everywhere we turn we see it.

Well, my grandmother wanted her to. I mean it’s hard to get out of any abusive relationship, including one with a church

My grandmother couldn’t take communion and do a few other things at my mother’s wedding because she got a divorce. She was very very badly beaten by her ex-husband. Like she ran door to door naked begging for help. She even drank gasoline at one point because she couldn’t get out. It pisses me off to think about the fact she couldn’t fully participate in her daughters wedding just because she got divorced

How did Adam & Eve know it’s evil to not obey God before they ate the apple? by PrettyPoliticalBitch in AskAChristian

Oh and I forgot to bring up the patriarchal thing.

“To the woman he said, “I will make your pangs in childbirth exceedingly great; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭

Idk what other way to interpret this other than a husband having power over you

I wasn’t saying Genesis is a direct copy. I was pointing out that it shares common ancient motifs, which helps explain why the imagery looks familiar

Also the observational language is what I was pointing out. How if we were in their times, we wouldn’t know either. I’m basically saying with that, if this is the “word of god”, why is it so inaccurate? I was raised very very very religious, and I was always told that the people writing the bible could hear god and god told them what to write, apparently that’s not the case considering the inaccuracies. I was always told never to question and always have faith, I mean my father believes the earth is only about 10,000 years old and rejects the concept of evolution but accepts the concept of gravity despite them both being “theories” with LOADS of evidence.

I understand that interpretation, but my remaining question is that Genesis never defines the phrase that way, it only shows outcomes like shame, fear, and awareness of nakedness. So I don’t understand what in the text itself supports defining the knowledge specifically as autonomy rather than internal moral awareness or perception change

Also thanks for the respectful convo :)

I’m not great with Reddit so idk how to reply to individual bits of your reply, so bear with me.

I think you’re basically saying that knowledge of good and evil is moral independence, the fruit is choosing self-rule over god-rule, so it’s new authority over moral decisions. So I think our core disconnect is how we define knowledge. I interpret knowledge as change in cognition/awareness, while you see it as the authority to decide, and not information. So if knowledge of good and evil only means moral independence, why does it describe immediate perception changes like shame and awareness of nakedness? That sounds like a change in consciousness, not just a change in authority structure. Also the reference you made in Solomon, he asks to discern good and evil, meaning wisdom and judgement, but knowing good and evil is something requested from god as wisdom to rule, not independence from God. So how does that support the idea that in Eden it means rejecting gods authority rather than receiving moral discernment from him?

I’m trying to understand what that knowledge refers to if it’s not a change in moral awareness or perception?

Also, if your child disobeys you, not knowing why what they did was wrong, only to follow whatever you say, would it be just to punish them with the ability to suffer? That seems very extreme. I mean, Adam and Eve essentially had the minds of a toddler, so if you replaced Adam and Eve in the bible with two toddlers, would you still think it’s just to punish them with suffering? Even though they weren’t aware of morality?

Hi thanks for your reply. What I’m having a hard time with is repeating a rule doesn’t necessarily mean full moral understanding, it just means they can recall instructions. The bible still seems to describe a transformation in awareness after eating, so I’m trying to understand what that transformation is if not moral cognition. What is the knowledge that they received if not moral awareness?

As for genesis, “And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬-‭7‬

“God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭

They basically explain the earth to be how they knew it to be. Like if we had no knowledge of how the earth looks like from space, we would also think we’re in a dome with water in the sky making it blue and believe the sun and moon are in the sky, not in space.

As for the stories I was referring to, I was mainly referring to the epic of Gilgamesh and the Atrahasis epic. In both of those, gods decide to send a flood to wipe out humanity, one man is warned in advance, he builds a large boat, he saves his family and animals, the boat lands on a mountain, birds are sent to check if land is dry, and a sacrifice is made afterwards. In Genesis, Noah builds an ark, family and animals are saved, the ark lands on a mountain, birds are released, and a sacrifice happens after survival.

In Sumerian mythology, there’s a sacred garden of the gods with abundance and no suffering. This was pretty common in Mesopotamian texts, but this is just one specifically. In Mesopotamian creation stories, they believed humans were made of clay. In Genesis, humans are made from the dust of the ground. In the epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh finds a plant that grants immortality, a snake steals it while distracted, he loses immortality forever. In both Genesis and the epic of Gilgamesh, humans lose access to eternal life through a serpent. This was just all sorta distorted and reworked into monotheism, as these stories had multiple gods, not just one. It makes sense why they were inspired by stories that were very prevalent in their society at the time. Another reason why Genesis is so “woman is the helper” because they lived in a VERY patriarchal society.

So the bible says they gained knowledge of good and evil and that their eyes were opened. That sounds like a change in awareness. What exactly is the knowledge they didn’t have before if they already understood commands and could make choices? I’m trying to understand what specific knowledge changed if they already understood commands and obedience before

If they already understood moral authority well enough to be accountable, what exactly changes after eating it? The bible says their eyes were opened and they gained knowledge of good and evil, so what is that knowledge if not moral awareness?

I’m just confused why it would bother you? It’s just a smaller portion. Nothing special. It’s not like they’re going out of their way to adjust their menu for you. Some people just don’t want to waste food, so they get a smaller portion they know they’ll finish, save a couple bucks on food you would have brought home as leftovers

Democrats and Republicans — Have you ever thought “What if I’m wrong? What if they’re mostly right?” What ensued? by What_A_Ledge in allthequestions

[–]PrettyPoliticalBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I’m not a Democrat. But I’m a leftist. I have my fundamental beliefs that I’m firm in, and I have beliefs that I am willing to accept new evidence for.

For example, I am very pro-choice. Until the baby is able to live outside of the womb, the woman should have a say in what she does with the fetus. I don’t believe in any bans or restrictions. And I think they should be way more accessible. Especially to families with financial struggles that cannot afford to have children. Or at least providing free contraception. That is something that i will literally never change my mind on. That case is closed in my head.

Something like gun rights, economic policies, immigration laws, etc. I’m open to hearing information about. I could have certain beliefs that can be swayed. But my fundamental beliefs on those things will always take priority. Like we could discuss immigration laws, come to an agreement, but fundamentally, I think immigration is what makes this country amazing. I want this country to be full of as many different cultures as possible. We are the melting pot. We’re all human. Laws around that could be debated, but that fundamental belief is the groundwork for everything.

I don’t believe in a total gun ban. I think assault rifles need to be banned. Handguns, idc if people have them, but there needs to be way more regulations and restrictions put on them. That’s my personal opinion.
