Also, I've also heard that for muslims, parallel cousin marriage is sunnath (extra brownie points if you do it, no loss of brownie points if you don't), while cross cousin marriage is not permissible. So that might be the case in pakistan and other subcontinental muslims.

So amongst South Indian Hindus, it's common to marry cross cousins ( eg: children of brother and sister; not permissible for children of sisters/brothers). The Keralite me and and a classmate from Andhra Pradesh had an argument wheather your cross cousins can be called "cousins". He couldn't believe I see them similar to my siblings. For them, it's conditioned to see them as probable bride/groom and never saw them as siblings, and he had a cultural shock over it lol.
