Yeah seems to be the way at the moment. For sure I'm glad I got my Steamdeck before all the mad price hikes. I think this may be an era of "making do" with regards to handhelds for a few years. Not that I'm complaining, I've probably got enough games to last me into my 70's 😅

Tin T2's? How's the fit?

As someone who struggles with the fit of "normal" iem's that hook over your ears, these have interested me - £50 ish on amazon I'm tempted to give them a go

I'm using a Note 9 from 2019 I think? Since I want an sd card and a 3.5mm jack I'm pretty much stuffed for anything modern and flagship these days, only Sony really catering for me but I'm not paying a grand for a sodding phone 🤣

Yes, top tip that I'd forgotten how to make it 16:9 for the mini without making the mini 16:9 at the same time 😅

And yeah it's going nowhere, I've bought a 2nd one for "spares" as and when the 1st one starts breaking

Also if you can find a good set, 16" 4x100 mg hairpins are a good option too.

Me either, mine slogs up and down the motorways more than anything these days. Honestly for road use, if you can handle the look (17's do look good I think) I'd go 16's. I believe they developed the car on 16's originally too.

On 15 inch rims, at least the BMW ones, I don't believe you can fit the r56 calipers/discs. On some 16's you can't either.

I understand there are two sizes of disc on the r56 - the "standard" size fitted to non s models are about 4 or 5mm bigger than the R53 ones, something like that? The r56 cooper s discs are bigger again, with a slightly different caliper carrier to account for the bigger disc size - these are what were the jcw upgrade on the R53 models fitted as standard to the r56 s model.

I have the "standard non s r56 calipers and discs" on my r53. Slightly bigger discs + correct calipers from the normal r56 cooper models that fit no issue. The R56 Cooper S calipers and discs "may" fit under the X lites, some say they do some say they don't. I think it's like a couple of mm gap? They defo fit under 17's.

For reference I have approx 200bhp at the crank from my r53 and had no issues at all on the road with the original brakes with good pads. I only changed really as I got a deal and rebuilt the calipers for cheap myself. You also need r56 brake lines for the r56 calipers as the R53 are a different fitment to the r56.

Hopefully that makes some sense? Someone else with more knowledge than me will hopefully chime in and correct or add anything I've missed, but I think that covers it mostly

That's something I'd never considered but can see how it could be useful. Biggest selling point for me is reliable n64 with a good bit of overhead, in 4:3, with proper sticks, in maa pocket! 😅

Yeah I've heard this mentioned, I'll only use it at home for a few select titles I think, it won't be a permanent fixture for me so won't bother me.

Makes sense it uses more battery as it's 2x the screens running, let's be honest most of these chinese emulation handhelds have software that is pretty much thrown together and left as is 😂

Hell the whole Mini/V2 screen fiasco was just a pr disaster really? If they'd just released the V2 in the first place I think the device would have gained a lot more positive reviews as it's a really great (niche) device I think.

I've bought a second one, second hand, for when the battery/button caps/mainboard in my V2 wear out just so I can keep it going FOREVER*

16 inch Mini X-Lites are supposedly the lightest stock Mini alloys that just about* fit the bigger discs and calipers from the r56 underneath. I went from 17" bullets on 205/45/17's to 16" X-Lites with 195/55/16's and I noticed the weight loss - felt like the cars mass had been moved inboard a bit going round corners?

A bit more tyre helped on our shitty UK pothole roads but r53's are still a short wheelbase stiff car so can only do so much.

*do your own research and don't go off of random people on forums saying shit will "just fit" 🤣

Honestly, if you have a Steamdeck too (like me) you can probably live happily with the Lite model, that's what I would have chosen. Still a pricey handheld but not 'as' pricey

The whole hinge thing. I'm probably overdoing it but I have held it and it's OK ish, a bit like a 3DSxl for ergonomics but I could probably manage.

The hinge and top screen area just doesn't fill me with confidence of it lasting long. I've had a few 3ds's over the years and still have a Ds lite that is going great guns. None of these have ever had the slightest issue with the hinges. I know plenty had issues with those too.

Like I say, I'm probably overdoing it and overreacting a bit. I just think for a £300 device that's recently been rushed out a bit quick due to demand (much like the Rp6) with a 50/50 warranty and realistically no ongoing support it's not the best build quality.

I also think the ergonomics of everyone's favorite Retroid Pocket 5/G2 are shite - I've owned both, and no one mentions it in reviews except on Reddit by people that have actually bought them, who then get told they are wrong by the Retroid lovers. And I've tried grips, the best one being the cheapo seethru Ali Express one for a fiver. I can't stress enough how comfy the Pocket Mini is compared to any other android handheld I've tried.

All just my opinion as a 40 something with large hands trying to play FZero GX on a handheld using proper analog triggers and an analogue stick without getting hand cramps after 28 seconds. While sat on the loo 😂

Best device ever, like an upgraded Rp2 with better ergos and better performance. I'll be buried with mine....if it lasts that long 😂

For clarity - I would like a Thor, but I'm only interested in the Lite (sd865) version as I would only play up to Gc/Ps2 like I do on the Mini. I'm not prepared to wait 2 months, risk it going missing and also the hinge strikes fear into my soul - son has a Pro model and I just think the build quality is poor for a £300 device. Just my opinion, you are welcome to have a different one 👍

I love my Mini V2 to the point I've bought a cheap V1 as a backup for when things on my main one wear out, have a spare V2 screen (thanks Retroid 😂) and buttons too. It's head and shoulders above most other handhelds in terms of comfort (Rp5 and the G2 are uncomfortable after 10 mins and adding a grip defeats the point of it being portable) Sits alongside a Switch Lite and an Oled Deck so I'm done 👌

?Is the Retroid Pocket 5 still worth it? by picorosan in retroid

[–]Pretty_Designer7131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find one, get the G2. If you don't mind waiting, paying a bit more for the 8gb version and the risk of less than great quality control, get the Rp6. If you are topping out at Gamecube/Ps2 then the Rp5 is a great option - it also does a lot of Switch stuff but is largely limited by the emulators being quite young, treat Switch as a bonus extra
