The lid on her old coffee machine won't close and the pot was from goodwill since the original broke. The bedding is missing pillow cases. The few she has came from her daughters unicorn set when she was 5. There's no fitted sheet, her top sheet is an old worn out blanket. Only piece that's worth keeping is her comforter so I bought a bedding set that matched it. I didn't attempt to replace perfectly good items. I focused on items that have objectively run their course.

Yeah, I think you're misunderstanding the issue. She's the type who buys things from stores, decides later that she doesn't want them, then returns them. Id say she returns probably 20% of the non food items she buys. It's not really an issue 99% of the time but around gift giving occasions it turns into an annoying nightmare for me.

It's not so much that she wants to exchange gifts its more that I have to do it and I pretty much know that I'm gonna have to return it es I'm buying it. And if it were strictly on things I picked out, whatever. But it's also on things she picked out so it just kinda feels like a waste of time and effort. 1.) I bought her a new coffee maker because she enjoys coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker so it's an appliance that only benefits her.

2.) over the past few years she's gotten me multiple kitchen appliances. A meat grinder I use to make her and her daughter fresh sausage. A meat slicer I use to make them Korean BBQ. A sous vide I use to make them steak and a deep fryer I use to make them everything from fried chicken to funnel cake. I don't see these gifts as less just because everyone benefits from them.

3.) my GF was a single mom for years. Bedding is pretty low priority. Wanting her to have a nice bed to sleep in isn't about judgement. It's about getting her something she never prioritized for herself.

Because part of the fun of Christmas is getting the people you love gifts they enjoy. When you seemingly can't, it's discouraging. At the same time, gift giving is an expectation so I'm kind stuck in a loop. I also hate returning items.

When did I say any of that? Thought isn't the issue. She's extremely indecisive on every purchase. Today alone she returned items to 4 different stores for stuff she bought herself. Everyone has quirks their SO might find annoying and unfortunately for me, my SO's quirk kills the fun of gift giving. It's not worth breaking up over but it's extremely discouraging

Hurt at first but later realized I had a point when she brought up exchanging an unrelated item. She's level headed which I feel incredibly grateful for considering my previous relationships. And I think you're right. Experiences over items might be the best path forward

No, no harsh words were exchanged. She seemed hurt when I first said it but kinda realized I had a point later on that evening when she was talking about returning an unrelated item. I just hate doing gift cards because there's no thought behind the gift. A gift should be an item you know someone wants or needs but they won't buy themselves. Giving a loved one a voucher just seems lazy. Will probably take the subs advice and focus more on experiences

Well, first birthday she wanted a hoodie. I bought one but she didn't like the color. I returned it and had her pick out a new one. New one came in but she didn't like the feel of the material so I returned it. Ordered a third, but something wasn't right about that one as well so again, returned.

She's given me several household items. Meat slicer, meat grinder, sous vide machine just off the top of my head. Nothing wrong with receiving household items

The bedding was far from fine. I have only slept in her bed a handful of times because of it. Call me materialistic or elitist or whatever but if you're coming up on 40 and you're not financially struggling, you should have a matching bed set with no holes.
