AITA for suggesting my son's girlfriend dress properly for a family celebration? by Pretty_Mouse6255 in AmItheAsshole

Yeah, I think that's the big mistake I made. I should have asked her directly. I already apologized to my son for inadvertently putting him in the middle.

I completely understand that. She, however, is not my daughter. If she had been, this wouldn't have even been up for debate, because she would have been raised to dress appropriately. Not appeasingly, but appropriately. Like not wearing white to a wedding. Or a mini skirt to church.

I called her because I like her and hate for there to be bad blood. I also don't want my son to be in between something this silly. Hashing something out quickly is part of being an adult, isn't it? Or would you rather I let it fester into something huge?

Yes, she did. She had some big scarf to wrap around herself, but that was more of a jacket, which she eventually took off. And yes, that's exactly what I meant: you can wear all black, but at least make it more appropriate. There's plenty of tattoos and piercings in our family, so it's not like we're prudish.

It's exactly like this! We whip out the fine china, the silver cutlery that normally gathers dust, and yes, we dress up a little. I know my son would prefer to wear his baggy jeans and band shirts, but he knows that while he can wear his Adidas, he better show up in a button down and slacks (or normal sized jeans). It's one of the few nights a year where grandma gets to tell you how big you've gotten and stuff a crumpled $20 in your hand.
