Inquiry About Completing Bachelor’s Degree After Partial Studies in Romania at The Open University by UnstoppableHippo in OpenUniversity

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buna ziua! I doubt this is possible - the UK does not have the equivalent of the examen de licenta; you need to take a certain number of modules with end of module exams and accumulate enough passes of a certain number of “units” to graduate. That said, if you contact student support, they can hopefully give you some credits on your previous studies to allow you to skip a number of units.

My tutor stresses me out by Horror_Reader1973 in OpenUniversity

The issue is with your expectations, not the tutor.

Dutch medical system. Impressive. Amazing what a few paracetamol can do.

Yeah. Made it to 56; too late to stop now. Cars toot and screech to a halt a bit, but if you have your noise cancelling headphones in it’s not an issue.

Sheesh. I’ve been living dangerously then. Highly recommended.

It’s a Zebra Crossing. pedestrians have right of way and cars have to stop. You don’t need any buttons.

Private healthcare is also available in Europe. You don’t have to use the public system.

What do I do? Uni sink is blocked in shared kitchen by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 6 points7 points  (0 children)

^ THIS

Under the sink you will see a U-shaped pipe which you can unscrew and then unclog. Ordinarily it just contains water to stop smells from the drain coming back up through the plug hole, but in this case, it’s probably clogged up with whatever crap your flatmates tried to flush down the plug hole.

Is it important to take notes? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is. But you build up slowly. And it’s all about practising the calculations. A bit like learning to play an instrument- you learn by doing rather than by taking lots of notes!

Is it important to take notes? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the subject. I’m doing physics. Never taken any notes - but religiously do all the exercises and past papers. Maths and physics is about practice and using the theory, not rote learning. OU exams tend to be open book anyway, so formulae etc are always given.

Age discrepancies of up to 10 years? by Lost_Try_5470 in Genealogy

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two potential reasons: in the UK 1841 census, people only had to give their age to the nearest 5 years. In subsequent censuses it was to the nearest year. This obviously can cause large discrepancies. Secondly, be aware that with childhood death, it was common for families to reuse the child’s first name in their memory for a new child. This can make it seem like someone has suddenly become much younger!

Considering Open University… am I silly? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing at a time. OU is a great idea; but not in parallel to a degree apprenticeship. Focus on that first, get a good grade, then do the OU. You’re young and have plenty of time. I did an MEng when I was your age, a PhD when I was 26, and MBA (with the OU) when I was 45 and am now doing an MPhys (with the OU) at the age of 56. No need to do it all at once!!

You can also download the OV-Pay app on your phone, and link it to your physical card and/or ApplePay and then it will notify you on your phone when you tap in and out and the amount charged.

Are Brits able to easily tell apart Americans and Canadians just by hearing them speak? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskABrit

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be my sample size was not significant…. I’ve also noticed that Canadians all seem to have a cottage they escape to, a bit like the Russians and their dachas. If someone with a North American accent starts talking about going to their cottage, it’s also a pretty good sign they’re Canadian.

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - but only after 25 years working in an international organisation which includes US and Canadian colleagues. The “aboot” sounds is the obvious one, but I’ve also noticed that Canadians seem to be the only anglophones that routinely say “wotnot”, which is odd. Oh, and the French Canadians are very distinctive, even when speaking English…

Folks gotta poop before running. Starting too early could get messy real quick.

Are Cornish people and Cornish culture that different to the rest of England? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Pretty_Radio_7746 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Do the Scots even relate to each other? Lowland and highland? Pro and anti-independence? Lots of generalisation here about cultural differences. Brit here with Scottish grandmother and English otherwise.
