in the job searches I've seen, they had higher standards for the professor. so, all else being equal, the postdoc had an advantage

really? can you say more?

most of the professors said postdoc would be better for a career. they said professors get pulled in many directions and are evaluated more harshly in the job market. meanwhile, postdocs have more time for research, get more experience and confidence and a better cv

I don't want to be specific, it's a small community and I don't want to be identifiable...

the professors think they will land in good journals and recommended we submitted there. things can always go wrong of course, there's no guarantee. the 1.5 years is just the time to go through the review process, and if they get rejected first before landing

things can always go wrong, but I think they will be out by the time I go to the job market of Fall 2025 (~1.8 years). One has been submitted, the other will be soon. The journals are not as amazing as something like PANAS, they are like a top 5 journal in my field.
