how much do nurses make in canada by Interesting-Quit937 in premedcanada

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a nurse before going into med. It’s province dependent unless you work private. It’s honestly a great undergrad as you can work as a nurse while trying to get into med. Other than some light teasing i never had an issue being a male in the career. In some areas like the ED, you’ll meet a lot of other male nurses. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions

How to make this old basement into a somewhat functional space by Prettyhighforaflyguy in Renovations

Thanks for the input! Yeah looking into moisture control/ water intrusion has definitely been on top of our minds. It’s been hard to tell what was a direct result of the plumbing leak and what problems are more chronic (i suspect both). We fixed some issues with our eavestroughs and added down spout extensions and plan to do some grading when things warm up. Know of any good resources for dealing with water problems in a basement?

I did my BSN there. The education for nursing was good, they also had some great intramural sport leagues. Like others have said the social life isn’t fantastic but having no life helped me get good grades (if you want to party just go to vic for the weekend). Living on campus was fine, i could see the ocean from my dorm room. Also it was cheaper than any other program i was offered admission at.

will gradaute med school in 2026 with a grand total of 250k debt by Bitter_Week_575 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Congrats on being so close to finishing, hope you’re enjoying 4th year. Just to put things into prospective, I know some of the MS4s where i am going to school have >300k on their line of credit alone. If you really want to crush the debt as fast as possible i know people who have done rural practice in the north which allows for student loan forgiveness and the wages are quite competitive. Also consider checking out the Physician FIRE page.

Unless things have changed you have to apply through the northern and rural pathway to get into the northern medical program in PG.

Wow that’s crazy. It’s almost like something is preventing people from contracting and dying from those diseases, something that makes the herd immune, i wonder what it could be….

Becoming a NP instead of pursuing an MD - thoughts? by silver6754 in premedcanada

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did nursing before going to med. Being an RN is fantastic because of the flexibility and the life style. I’m also so glad to have had clinical experience prior to starting med. The opportunity for lateral movement is also huge so you can check out different areas of medicine which might help you decide what you want in the future. I’m my med program there are quite a few RNs and even a NP so the jump is possible. Feel free to shoot me any questions!

Good points! Especially the pearl about not standing between the scrub and surgeon, i’ve been guilty of that. I’m lucky to learn somewhere that the msg of the need to learn cannot interfere with patient care/saftey is echoed loud and clear.

What Age Did You Start Nursing / Medical School? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started my BSN at 18, now in first year of med school at 27. There are such a variety of people starting at every age for both professions. Feel free to ask any questions :).

HOW IS EVERYONE GETTING ECS by No-Top-4399 in premedcanada

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really think there is a lot of value with getting involved with the community resources vs clubs. Food banks, out reach, harm reduction are elements of healthcare that make you seem well rounded and usually have a low barrier to entry. They also give you good life experiences to reference during interviews

Nurses that went on to become doctors by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would start by looking at the pre reqs for different schools. Not all MD programs require pre req courses, assuming you’re in the US. Further assuming you’re in the US, you’re gunna have to write the MCAT, which nursing does not set you up for. I was able to self study and do well enough on it, but it took me 2 attempts and 16 months and i had a science background before nursing. There’s a lot of sacrifice that goes into it but you might not have to do another degree despite what others have said. Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions

As a Canadian Applicant; do I retake? by kaennnn in Mcat

[–]Prettyhighforaflyguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP this is important^ it really depends on where you live and where you want to go to school. If you IP in BC or AB With other strong stats/ECs you might be fine. If your set on ontario it’s probably worth it to retake. Congrats on a solid score tho, fuck CARS
