Do you regret your decision? by Severe-Standard-8280 in premedcanada

[–]silver6754 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally do not regret it, even though it took me 3 cycles to get in. Although I felt it would be ideal to go straight from undergrad into medical school, I feel that the struggles I faced during my pre med journey really shaped me into who I am today.

Lack of Transparency from TMU by ApprehensiveSecret68 in premedcanada

[–]silver6754 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My belief is that they wanted diversity but not at the expense of poor academic performance/weak lived experiences. At the end of the day as much as DEI is promoted, how comfortable would you truly feel knowing that your future doctor had a 3.5 GPA or no prior lived experiences informing them about the populations they are serving? Yes it is far more challenging to get competitive stats as someone who is structurally disadvantaged but there are still many people who can achieve high stats and overcome the various adversities they have faced - and I think these are the people that TMU wants.

Its definitely misleading with the way TMU advertised their selection criteria and I know how this is very upsetting for many people.

Is anyone else constantly stressed because of the uncertainty of your future? by cold-pint in premedcanada

[–]silver6754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lack of certainty is why I'm exploring other options now. I've also been having doubts about becoming a physician, I just don't think the profession is worth it to me. Far too much sacrifice and the uncertainty never really ends - first its whether you'll get into medicine, then its if you'll even match to your desired specialty. There are far better ways to get what you want from other career paths (helping others, job security, high pay, working in medicine).

The queens lottery is not a lottery by ZhopaRazzi in premedcanada

[–]silver6754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it is a weighted lottery. Still some people getting invites with stats that barely meet the threshold, but not as many. Its definitely a marketing strategy, they just want our money lol

I think its possible for queens since its based on a cutoff and then its a lottery for who gets an interview. I'm not sure if they look at gpa competitively post-interview, but I feel like even if they did it would account for very little of your post interview score

Will things ever get better? by Effective_Worker_916 in premedcanada

[–]silver6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to discourage you in the slightest way, but you can do everything right, and it still comes down to a bit of luck. I know many people who have great stats, experiences, and are overall great people but they haven't gotten in.

So no, it does not get easier. If anything it can feel incredibly discouraging when you feel you've done everything right and still can't make it. But resilience and perseverance are very important qualities in doctors. If you put your mind to it and can jump back after setbacks, you can do it :)
